Life is structured in a year long cycle and the wheel is now in the month of Elul, the month of spiritual preparation for the New Year and Yom HaKippur, the Day of Judgment. In this mood of repentance, we start our day an hour earlier, praying Selichot (asking forgiveness), and blowing the shofar (a ram's horn) after morning services. Frequently I stay awake working all night and watch from my balcony Sepharadis in surreal lamplight walking to the synagogue and singing melodic prayers.
