Magyar Race Theory

It is almost impossible to find original pseudo-scientific race theories on the internet or antique bookshops, nothing in German and very little in English. Thus I was surprised by the rich collection of false race science in Hungarian. Hungarians, living in the German cultural influence, developed their own race literature in the twenties, written in pompous pseudo-scientific jargon and so fantastically against common sense that only during an era when people never travelled nor saw foreign individuals could be read with some seriousness. For example, Gaspary's race science book (all on the internet), classifies the Sudeten Germans as Mongoloid, with big round heads and dark skin. Schwabian Germans are of East Baltic race, that is, Asiatics (see pic). Jews are classified as Hamitic negroes and the Jewish chapter is illustrated with semi-naked African tribesmen. Since Ashkenazi Jews have a much higher frequency of blond and blue eyed individuals that Hungarians or even Germans, they could be classified as Africans only if the readers had no first hand experience with real Africans and have never seen a Black person. Which was true in Central Europe in the twenties. The Hungarian chapter is interesting, because it tries to glorify the noble founding Magyar race while showing that Hungarians are more European than the Germans or Danes. The classification is very confused, the whole thing is shere nonsense. I quote extracts in Hungarian: The first paragraph demonstrates that original Hungarians from Turan (Central Asia) were exterminated in Hungary and the country is peopled by ethnic Serbs, Croats, and other neighboring peoples. I presume that in the twenties this was so obvious (the rural population did not yet speak Hungarian) that it could not be talked away.

A mohácsi vész a nagyon heterogén, éppen ezért önmagával nagyon meghasonlott főnemesség sorában ijesztő pusztítást végzett. 24 ezren maradtak a csatatéren. A parasztlázadásban a különböző nemzetiségű jobbágyok tízezrei pusztultak el. A vérbeli magyarságot a 150 esztendős török járom tizedelte meg. A legmagyarabb vidékek, a magyarság faji központjai teljesen elpusztultak. — Nemzetiségeink 46.5%-át a XVIII. században engedtük be földünkre.

The chapter on Jews is pure phantasy, illustrated with pictures of Africans. The last sentence states that Jews cannot be assimilated and their African blood makes them forever foreign in Europe.
A szemek fényesek, a szemhéj nehézkes, duzzadt, gyakran a szem alatti redő is megvan, ami a szemnek sajátos lapos, nervozus tekintetet ad.

Please forgive the excess posting but you have much that is worthy of comment.

"[Jews] could be classified as Africans only if the readers had no first hand experience with real Africans and have never seen a Black person. Which was true in Central Europe in the twenties."

My late father told me that he saw a black person for the first time in his shtetl in Poland during the 1930s when a traveling circus came thru town. People rubbed the skin of the Negro to see if it was paint that could be removed.

Still, this was a small shtetl and not Budapest and those rubbing were not doctor-professors. Gaspary had surely seen Africans if not in person at least in photographs. But people believe what they want to believe - that a man can climb out of his grave after three days and fly up to heaven for example.

I don't (and most people don't) read Hungarian (which by the way is a language that is almost entirely unintelligible to an English speaker, neither Germanic nor Latin) so a translation or at least a summary would be helpful. I was able to get a web translation but it choked on előázsiai -what does this mean? Also he appears (from what I could understand) to attempt to distinguish the "Hamite" Jews from Negroes ("Neger") and that third group. The "Hamites" despite the picture, are usually identified as North Africans such as Berbers. Although they are perhaps a little darker skinned than most Ashkenazi Jews, their features are not totally unlike the stereotypical Jewish appearance. See this photo for example: http://www.worldpress.org/0801nations2.htm
so it was not like he was comparing the Jews to coal black sub-Saharans.

I specially liked his conclusion at the end that " someone who gives up his Jewish religion is not set free from the physiological community [of Jews], indeed any European who gets into contact with him is including Jewish blood in himself. "

This kind of thinking of course led directly to the Holocaust -if even conversion was not capable of eradicating Jewishness (indeed was pernicious because it would only result in contamination of the European races) then the only alternative was expulsion or death.

I don't know what the agenda of the author is in publishing such views. Not all Hungarians are racist just as not all Americans are bigots. Some nations used Africans as slaves not that long ago. At least one white Anglo-Saxon nation forcibly took children away from their parents in order to destroy traditional cultures in the name of civilization.

A little balance in this area would be appreciated. Most nations have much to be ashamed of.

Hi-
I only speak English but am doing research on my family's history. I found a document from my maternal grandmother stating her race was Magyar which I've never heard of before and did a google search and found your blog. I was wondering if you could tell me what it is exactly. My family is Jewish so I'm a bit confused if she was an Anti-Semite or what.
Thank you,
Jen

előázsiai = relating to the near east that is near asia. Near to what? Near to the observer, who is a Hungarian.

Regarding the grandmother who declared her race to be magyar, most probably she referred to the fact that among the many races and ethnias peopling the Austro-Hungarian Empire, she was not rus, not croatian, not german but hungarian. After 1848 most Hungarian Jews declared themselves to be Hungarians and stopped speaking Yiddish or German and embraced Hungarian culture andlanguage.

There are many Jews in Hungarian history up to the point that it is known that the chief tribe of the seven hunnish tribes that conquered Hungary and established the nation was ... Jewish. They are related to the Khazars who had adopted the Jewish religion. So many Hungarian Jews proclaimed that they were from the real, authentic Hunnish stock.

Anyway, all that didnt help them and were killed by the Nazis as racial Jews.

There is one exception. If your grandmother is from the Transylvanian region, there were several ethnic Hungarian villages that adopted the Jewish religion and declared themselves to be Jewish. They are called Szombatistak and they suffered a lot for their religion but were not exterminated. Some came to Israel and merged with racial Jews, others still live in remote villages of Romania. The rabbinate does not recognize them as Jews and they have to convert formally to be accepted. They are basically an Evangelical sect, very nice people.
