The Fortress (Prison) of Lancaster. Many of Australia's founding fathers and mothers passed by its underground windowless cells. Below: The bombed out Cathedral of Coventry. Detail of the adjoining new Cathedral: The Devil.

The man who sculpted the Devil was of course a Polish Jew, Jacob Epstein. The Jews are everywhere, even in churches.
The rest of the new Cathedral is a modernist horror show. The goyim of Medieval Europe didn't know much but they sure knew how to build a nice looking church. We now know how to make high explosive weapons and deliver them from the air, but somehow we have lost the ability to build beautiful churches.
Thank you for the comment. Agreed that the sculpture is very impressive, and the new Cathedral is - aesthetically - an aberration. More so as it was built in parallel with the old 12th Century church. But as they say it is a "working structure", and we found it full of young people and social activities.
Old wooden Polish Synagogues were richly decorated and painted. It is a pity that the tradition was lost.
A lot of modern buildings are better on the inside than the outside. As our skills in building systems such lighting, plumbing, HVAC have improved, our architectural skills have atrophied.
It took high explosives from German bombers to take down the roof of the old Coventry Cathedral and still some of the walls remained standing. The Polish wooden synagogues were only a match away from destruction - my father said the Germans burned the synagogue of his shtetl in Poland on the day that they arrived in Sept. 1939 (I'm sure Hamas would wait no longer before burning the synagogues of Israel). The few synagogues that remained in Poland after the war were mostly turned into stables, garages, etc.
There are some lovely synagogues here in Philadelphia that were built in the 19th and early 20th century. Unfortunately, most of them are now in ghetto areas of the city and have been turned into churches. When the Jews fled crime to the suburbs following WWII, this was at a low point for architecture and most of what was produced was modernist boxes that have all the charm of bunkers.
