Two or three weeks ago Obama was enjoying a 15-20 percent lead over McCain. But now the worm has turned and McCain is leading by 47% vs 44%. How he did it? Maybe it was when McCain appeared at a biker rally in Sturgis, SD, announcing that “We are going to win in Iraq by winning!” and encouraging his wife to enter the “Miss Buffalo Chip” contest, completely oblivious (or not) that it is a lewd affair that even includes a topless competition. I think the turning point was the article in the Wall Street Journal. But most probably it was the helping hand from Vladimir Putin, who invaded Georgia, reviving in the hearts of Americans the fear of Communism. Of course Putin is no communist and Shakashvili is no democrat, but Russians sending tanks to a small country made Americans think: These commies are still out there, we cannot have a softie liberal leader, we need someone who can fight them. Obama is taller and looks much better, but old McCain has the right instincts.
