Does the word 'Palestine' have the same derivation as 'Philistine'?Anon.
I think so. It is the Greek name of the country, because the Greeks, a maritime nation, made contact with the Phillistines, who lived in Gat and Ashkalon, on the sea. The Jews occupied the Samarian and Galilean hill country, and the Judean Desert. The Phillistines were protogreek people who, under Alexander´s rule, completely assimilated into the Hellenic nation.
I don't think the Persians tried to destroy the Jews. If you remember, the Persians set the Jews Free from Babylon. Haman tried to instigate the Persians to destroy the Jews but he failed and was not himself a Persian.Ancient Egypt is gone, but so is Ancient Israel. After all, the word Ancient means old.The Spanish Empire is kaput, but Spain is not. Spain's goal was to expel or convert and they were successful in that there are few Jews practicing in Spain and there is a hight percentage of Jewish ancestry in Spanish Christians. There was no Greek Empire per se. Alexander's Empire lasted for his life and then was rent apart by his generals. The Hellenistic states did try to convert the Jews to paganism and massacre was attempted when the effort failed.Babylonians took the Jews captive, but did not try to destroy them. Most governments or empires or commonwealths end, even Jewish ones. The people generally persist, even if the others don't have the national memory the Jews have.Does it mean anything? Your guess is as good as mine.
Salut!Yes be nice Israelis :)Sword vs sword : hug vs hug....... And pardon, but Your not quite the same than Israelis in 1.000 B.C.;)I don't get why in 15'century Jews' don't emigration to Islam world in North Africa if Europeans treat them bad?
Gentlemen,May I bring to your attention the fact that this is a T-shirt, not a textbook of history?
The Phillistines were protogreek people who, under Alexander´s rule, completely assimilated into the Hellenic nation. The story I heard was that after the Romans conquered Judaea they were so frustrated by the effort required to conquer it that they renamed the province in honor of Israels' ancient enemies.
I was talking about the Greeks. You are talking about the Romans. The Romans adopted the Greek name of the country.
