
Steve Sailer called my attention to the Ricci reverse discrimination case. A lawyer representing the New Haven firemen—who are suing the city for refusing to promote them for the last half decade because zero blacks passed the 2003 promotional exams—was grilled by Judge Sotomayor.
TORRE, defending the White firefighters who passed the exam but were not promoted, said: I think a fundamental failure is the application of these concepts to this job as if these men were garbage collectors. This is a command position of a First Responder agency. The books you see piled on my desk are fire science books. These men face life threatening circumstances every time they go out. ... Please look at the examinations. ... You need to know: this is not an aptitude test. This is a high-level command position in a post-9/11 era no less. They are tested for their knowledge of fire, behavior, combustion principles, building collapse, truss roofs, building construction, confined space rescue, dirty bomb response, anthrax, metallurgy...Firefighters die every week in this country. ... [There was a case ] a few miles away where a young father and firefighter Eddie Ramos died after a truss roof collapsed in a warehouse fire because the person who commanded the scene decided to send men into an unoccupied house, with no people to save on Thanksgiving Day, with a truss roof known to collapse early in the fire because of the nature of the pins that hold the trusses together would have collapsed. And for 20 minutes he couldn't find any air and he he suffocated to death.I think that Steve Sailer is getting it all wrong and framing the debate in the false way. We have a situation where jobs like firefighters and their promotion systems were devised for an era where the population was uniformly White. The continuation of past systems designed specifically for Whites will ensure that only Whites will advance and be promoted. In the new population, which is diverse, promoting only Whites will develope a caste society, which is unacceptable by definition. Sotomayor demands the development of a promotion system that test knowledge in a more substancial way, meaning one that will permit non-Whites to be promoted. Everyone, including Steve Sailer, protests because they think that non-Whites are intrinsically inferior and therefore should not be promoted to the rank of firefighter lieutenant or captain. And they bring out the Bell Curve, which they think is God's Commandment to Opress Non-Whites.
JUDGE SOTOMAYOR: Counsel ... we're not suggesting that unqualified people be hired. But if your test is always going to put a certain group at the bottom of the pass rate so they're never ever going to be promoted, and there is a fair test that could be devised that measures knowledge in a more substantive way.
Having made more than a few shekels out of the firefighting trade, which is the ultimate demonstration that I have an idea of what I am talking about, I say that the firefighting job is badly designed and that firefighters use obsolete and unefficient methods and tools (see that clown in the pic). It could also be said that the system of testing and promotions guaranties the conservatism, the lack of innovation, the lack of imagination of the firefighting profession. The profession has developed into a Medioeval Guild, where the current rulers of the guild establish the system by which they will be replaced (in due time, of course...). As always, they make sure that their inheritors will continue their cherished, sacred traditions and they will look like they look.
The Ricci caste of ethnic (White) firefighter maffia must be attacked and I say attacked = from two directions:
(1) Competition. The firefighting market must be liberated. The current monopoly must be broken. A city, a commercial compound, a factory, must have the chance to choose between several service providers. If a private service offers faster response, better technical fire protection (say, by using fire retardant chemical fogs), and a competitive price, why should one be forced to rely an the city's monopoly? I compare the situation to the police in Israel: Due to several reasons, police does no actual policing and does not answer standard home robbery calls and so on. So a parallel sector of private guard companies have developed, that installs alarms and provide a rapid and reliable service. Since many policemen moonlight in these systems, they have legal and heavy-weapons backing, should they need it.
(2) Job redesign. The firefighting job description as given by Torre is anachronistic and idiotic. She thinks that the job of the firefighter is to heroically go inside a burning house with a powerful water hose. Risking limb and life if something falls or collapses on their stupid heads, like in the World Trade fire where hundreds of heroic if imbecile firefighters died. That is wrong. Today the job is prevention, alarm, authomatic computer managed operation, and so on. No firefighter should be forced to calculate on the site the optimal combination of water hoses to reach a fire. The US Army did an excellent job in redefining the infantry soldier. They designed much simpler and reliable, idiot-proof hand weapons, eliminated all written manuals and literature, the adapted the job requirements to the new kind of recruits they had available. After the Viet Nam fiasco, they were forced to do some thinking and do with the Americans they had. They did not say that IQ 120 was necessary to be a Marine, since they had no IQ 120 recruits, so they quietly redesigned the Marine's job and weapons so that the people they had would be able to perform. And the American Army is very successful, it is winning everywhere.
Conclusion: Sotomayor - without being aware of what she was doing - is a force for change, a force for good. Ricci and his Italian and Irish firefighter caste, awake and start changing and adapting. Or die.

I myself don't know anything about firefighting, but reading that headline was sort of a shock. Maybe it's like if you went to a blog you liked and read, "Jerusalem needs more Palestinian firefighters, literate or not," and saw that the explanation was that difficult firefighting was develop too much to suit Ashkenazi (IQ 110-120).
I do like your blog a lot, but sometimes I get the sense that your essential conservative sensibilities are put on hold when thinking about any country that Kevin MacDonald lives in. Which, thankfully, is only one. :)

I rewrote the note on Sotomayor. She did the right thing for very wrong reasons. Firefighter monopolistic Medioeval guilds must be broken up - they no good for fire security and they are no good for themselves. Free market must be introduced into that trade. Competition. Renewal. New methods and new equipment. Ethnic maffias like the New Haven firefigters are an obstacle to progress.
Regarding Palestinian firefighters, you are getting me totally wrong. I could not care less for the Palestinians. I dont want to rule, to oppress them, to exploit them, to see them. Since they are here and they will be here forever, I want them to be rich like Saudi Arabian sheikhs, and I wish to each of them 4 beautiful virgin wives. Hopefully they will then leave us in peace. I dont want them to be discriminated against at all. I want them to be happy. I am investing quite an effort in my Arab students, because I want them to be good engineers and get good jobs and build good infrastructure. One good Arab engineer is ten Arab terrorists less. And I am talking only from a self-serving point of view, but there is also a moral, ethical aspect, and the Bible specifically commands to treat the "ger" - the non Jews living among us - equitably and with justice. We all should try to be better, more ethical persons. I do. Not always with success.
Well I never thought you had any desire to oppress Palestinians. Maybe you are right about firefighting; I had never thought of it as an old-fashioned guild or any of that. I don't think you are accurately portraying Sailer's position. He doesn't use the word "inferior" because it is imprecise and alarmist. He believes some non-white groups have lower average IQs than whites, and some have higher.
He also believes, as do many who are familiar with psychometrics, that IQ is correlated negatively with a variety of bad things, like sick days, workplace accidents, etc. When you say you believe Sailer thinks something, you make it sound like he has no evidence for it. In fact he has evidence for it, in probably over a hundred posts, and then along comes something like the New Haven test results and confirms it. The low sample sizes mean one year, two blacks will be among the dozen or more that pass the test. The next year, none were. This is not surprising to a statistician.
Thanks for clarifying but I'm still a little surprised by your position. My personal opinion is that Americans and Israelis need to stop telling each other what to do. Obama has angered me recently because he is a rank amateur and he presumes to tell Israel what to do. It may not comfort an Israeli much to hear that I voted against the gentleman who is demanding that Netanyahu change Israel's settlements policy, but I did.
Tell me something - I've wanted the opinions from Israelis on how necessary is American aid to the region. Ilana Mercer thinks the aid is definitely not necessary to Israel's survival.

It is my opinion that Israel acts as if they were dependent on the aid when they really are not. Wouldn't Israel have much more freedom of action if they weren't receiving aid? It's almost like the American attitude is that by aiding Israel we are buying common stock. Arrogant Americans like Obama will talk to Israel stockholder-to-management, and the Israelis will rightly be annoyed, and reply with some rudeness, as in Likud's recent "Iroquois territory" comment.

The manuals are still there. I don't think the Army ever expected the rank and file to read such material, really the manuals are there for the training of the officers. Also, I remember reeading that a good majority of young people in America today cannot meet the military's entrance requirements.
As for the firefighters, I have to partially disagree. A lot of fires have been prevented by instituting building codes, and because of the reduction in fires a lot of firefighters basically sit on their asses. Cities like NYC used to be entirely protected by volunteer firefighters, and except for Manhattan I think most cities can be protected that way again. In fact rural areas often have no professional fire and rescue squads, relying to this day entirely on volunteers.
Policing is another matter. Since police in America are supposed to be locally controlled they can be used to get rid of problems that a national force would normally overlook as a waste of time, such as chasing prostitutes out of the city limits.

Blacks have no chance, as a group, of meeting the white average. Exceptional blacks exist and can be attracted to any profession which sets its enticements above the others.

Regarding miliary manuals: "The manuals are still there." You are right. What I was saying (in my Levantine exaggerated style of expressing myself, laconic British understatement is not my way) is that the Army was deeply re-organized so that it can operate with the recruits it attracts, and the result is an American Army more powerful than ever. They have the most complex and advanced military equipment (unmanned planes come to my mind) and they operate it in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier ... from somewhere in Langley. They are doing it with decent, hardworking, respectable if not too bright Americans of all colors.
Regarding New Haven firefighters, I see it more as a tragedy than evil. The solution is to force a change in the system, and not allow the continuation of the current "impasse". That is what Sotomayor did. As Ronduck said, firefighters most of the time do nothing. The service should be transformed into a generic emergency response system, integrated with the health and police systems, and possibly with the military home front command. Most of the actual firefighting work should be outsourced to the private sector which detests formal exams and rigid promotion pathways, and has learned to survive and prosper under Government racial quota rules.

1. Internal security is a state matter, not federal. The Feds are overstepping their boundaries by creating a home front command (northcom). I think the idea to create such a command came from one of Dubya's Jewish advisers. This isn't meant to be anti-Semitic, but they saw the (unitary) state of Israel and wanted to transplant that here to a country with a federal system.
Personally, I would like to go back to having a public militia in each state. Alongside such a militia counties and cities can have full, part time or volunteer firefighters as their budget allows. A federal home front command is an invitation to meddle in state affairs, and use the Army for political purposes.
As for private firefighting, the local company Rural/Metro was originally formed to provide fire protection to Scottsdale AZ back when it did not have a fire department. RM was known for having smaller crews on their fire trucks since the company thought the one extra man was unnecessary. The company was formed by a man named Lou Witzeman, so I think he may have been Jewish (link)

Most everyone seems to think that nothing can be done about American white women not having enough babies, but sometimes I wonder. White birthrates are seriously hurt be unaffordable family formation, per Steve Sailer. One things that makes families unaffordable is the cost of living in low-crime neighborhoods.
It is taken as an article of faith that black criminals don't intentionally target whites for violence, but I'm not so sure. There has got to be some reasons blacks continue to have babies in high-crime areas, and it can't because "they don't have access to birth control". I hypothesize that the reasons they have babies in high crime areas is that they're not in all that much danger in those areas - at least, not as much danger as whites would be.
Obviously ethnic separatism is acceptable only for some countries, not others, but it's hard not to notice that white birthrates are perfectly healthy in certain areas, like Utah. (Israel, too, apparently has moderately high birthrates even among Ashkenazim.) It would be interested unmodified birthrates in China with birthrates among Chinese in areas where they are considered a "middleman minority" and discriminated against, but the PRC's one-child policy would make the comparison invalid.
Public, don't forget that the high-birthrate Blacks are heavily subsidized by the low-birthrate Whites.

As a former Army Reserve drill sergeant, and an observer of the U.S. military since, I can tell you this is false. First, there are a number of adjectives one might use to describe the M-16/M-4 rifles/carbines that are the U.S. Army's standard infantry weapon, but "idiot proof" and "reliable" aren't among them. These weapons are finicky and require frequent maintenance. And that's just the rifles. For all the high-tech stuff -- bomb disposing robots, electronic jammers to thwart IED triggers, hand-launched reconnaissance drones, etc. -- some grunts need to know how to operate them and some need to know how to fix them when they break.
The Army still also has plenty of manuals (although some are in cartoon form).
In general, though, modern, small-unit warfare requires greater intelligence and initiative of the average infantryman than ever before. This is even more true in counterinsurgency warfare of the sort that we are engaged in in Iraq and Afghanistan. It takes a certain level of intelligence and restraint to win hearts & minds by not killing local civilians and building rapport with them.

Israeli Army happens to use the same M-16 rifle and my personal experience as reserve duty soldier was that it is reliable and extremely simple. The best is that it is difficult to lose parts and can be re-assemble easily. No one I served with had any problem with it and most of us were veritable idiots. Some lost souls from the Ethiopian highlands found themselves suddenly in the Israeli Army and had no problems to operate it. The real danger was my officer Pfeffer who loved to clear the mechanism by hitting the rifle butt against a rock. If you mean Pfeffer-clones, true, the rifle is not idiot proof. Otherwise it is.
Operating the robots is child's play, no IQ required at all. But the dogs are dangerous! I dont want idiots playing with the dogs.
Regarding restraint, that is very difficult for 17 - 18 years old boys. In the last operation in Gaza, many of our boys were caught finding Palestinian credit cards and using them in Israel. Having been in Lebanon, I am convinced that if you cut the chains of a gang of healthy boys - you may call it an army - rapport building with local population will take place anyway, especially with the female sections. The best one can do in with a large, bothersome, obnoxious IQ, is to unscrew it, store it between cotton pads in a waterproof cigarbox and leave it home.
Dave is probably comparing the M-16 to the AK-47 in his head when he says the M-16 is complex.
The M-16 isn't complicated to fire, but the maintenance of it isn't idiot proof. It's tedious to clean, and if you don't clean it regularly, it jams up. AK-47s are idiot proof by comparison, and will fire reliably even when poorly maintained.
In my opinion, if the US Army had wanted a really simple primary rifle in 5.56mm, it could have picked the AR-18 or the Mini-14. Neither of those existed at the time the Air Force adopted the AR-15, but surely at some point we could have switched rifles, say during the 70s when we were sending all the Vietnam-era conscripts home. In any case, any weapon with a gas piston seems like it will be simpler in the field than a weapon that uses gas impingement, although I guess in some ways the latter is easier to design. As to the AKs, I can't compare them to the AR-18 or the Ruger for simplicity, but I bet the AK has the edge.
As far as night vision, I plead ignorance. As far as anti-tank weapons, again, the modern easy-to-use systems are often much more complex in design. Thus it takes an expert to use the M47 Dragon from way back in the Middle Ages; anybody can make a hit with a Javelin. But I bet maintenance on a Javelin is much harder than on a Dragon. And that raises a lot of teeth:tail questions I can't answer.
In any case perhaps what J is getting at is that we need to move our firefighting in a direction analogous to the move from Dragon to Javelin; use more equipment with onboard computers so the average bear can be useful with them. On the whole it is a worrying direction to me, but that may be just because I saw the movie Idiocracy a couple weeks ago.

The maintenance of the M-16 is difficult, I agree. Sand and dust tend to stick into greased surfaces, which are all of them. The M-16, if I am not wrong, was designed for Viet Nam jungle conditions and not for dust, sand and dirt. Not that it is intellectually challenging, but maintenance requires a high level of consciousness. Some Russian recruits who served with me had military experience in the Russian army, were all the time, obsessively, cleaning and greasing their rifles. Let me correct myself, maintaining a M-16 as is should be maintained is difficult for the common soldier.
J makes a good argument for the U.S. to returning to pre-1965 immigration policies, in that immigration from countries culturally and racially distinct from the receiving population inherently promotes social stratification. That's an interesting perspective.
I don't think Stoner had Vietnam on his mind when he designed the AR-10 and AR-15. US involvement there was minimal at the time. I think he wanted to sell the weapon to everyone.
So what's the deal with M16 versus Galil? I never see those pretty girls (I know they're not the only type of Israeli soldier) carrying anything that looks like an AK, it's always the good old Stoner.

Like Public said the M-16 wasn't designed for Vietnam. The first M-16's jammed constantly and got quite a few conscripts killed in the field. I remember reading in a gun mag that the forward assist had to be added in the second edition as part of the process of improvement.
A lot of the writers in the gun mag I was reading wanted to go back to the M-14.

As for the firefighters, I agree that the profession leaves much to be desired with its antiquated traditions and methods. But keep in mind that US court precedents have broad application. Perhaps if testing is no longer permitted for a profession such as firefighting, which is undeserving of protection in your view, it will also be prohibited for other professions such as engineering and medicine. Keep in mind this was the promotion test for officers, not that for common firefighters. Even in the US Army, a certain level of intelligence is required for officers, no matter how dumbed down the troops are. Maybe the job of grunt soldier or firefighter can be redesigned for those of low IQ (teaching done with picture books or animated cartoons, etc.) but what about say the job of water engineer or physician?
You say you are against castes - the original purpose of testing was to PREVENT castes - promotion would be available to all who met some objective set of criteria, regardless of ancestry. If slots on courts, in universities, etc. are awarded strictly based on population percentage, it will not be good for the Jews in America, where they are over-represented at the highest reaches (top universities, etc.) by maybe a factor of 10 (but "properly" represented once you take IQ into account.
Long ago and far away, once Malcolm X came to speak in the university I happened to be. In those days, we knew him from photos in the papers, and I was surprised that he was not black but yellow - olive skinned and spoke good English with NorthWest accent. In those times Jews were sensitive to Black antisemitism, coming as it did after Blacks got the vote thanks to Jews. He had a knack to pick out Jewish guys in the public and talked to us honestly. In those times classes were 100% white (would you believe it?) and being exposed to a schwartze (no offense, please) talking was a sensation.
