VVF Epidemy in Northern Nigeria

I spent two years in Bauchi little after the British created Nigeria and delivered it to the natives. It was a prosperous area, with large peanut and meat exports. Public order and safety was excellent in my times, but lately it seems to have deteriorated to the level of "war zone" and local papers write about an epidemy of VVF. What is VVF?

It is an injury caused by violent rape at an early age. VVF is a permanent hole between the bladder and the vagina that causes the continuous involuntary discharge of urine, causing profound disconfort and social trauma to the woman. It has become so widespread that some missionary clinics are specializing in repairing VVF.

You have to ask yourself, how can the destructive behavior which causes these injuries have become so common?

Surely ANY society would sooner or later have to evolve strategies to control this problem, otherwise these women would be severely disadvantaged and even removed from the gene pool. Presumably, since the injuries must have occurred at an early age, the perpetrators are known to the family? What is going on here, and why can it not be dealt with?

South Africa has a similar problem but the behavior has a different fundamental cause.

Fertility is not impaired, many girls so raped give birth to healthy babies.

From an evolutionary point of view, this gang rapes during disturbances and war, make sense. Our hominid cousins engage in this type of bestial behaviour, dont they?
