It is difficult to peer into the soul of Obama. Many people think his main desire in life is simply to be popular. As such, he has to float along on a wave of public adoration; this buoyancy demands a certain hollowness inside.
But his tanking popularity, partly related to the Gates fiasco but now increasingly to the deepening unpopularity of health care reform, will force him to choose: popularity or principle.
We will see how this turns out. I used to think he was just an "empty drum", but now I am beginning to think it is more complex than that; I think he is deeply committed to the destuction of anglocentric, white America. However, like a lot of people with strong emotions,he is not smart enough to avoid being manipulated by some very talented operators who share some of his goals, but definitely not others.
From his own perspective, Israel is just a pawn.
But here he has underestimated badly; watch out for a period of ambivalence and even frank confusion, followed by a forced change in tune closer to re-election time.
