Wheat futures

The world's most widely grown crop - wheat - may be in danger from the Ug99 fungus. The UG 99 is resistant to fungicides and has destroyed crops in Africa and Iran. Also European and American yields may be affected and prices may go up. (FAO)

The disease has attacked grasses since ever and it has been weaponized in the past. The United States produced wheat stem rust and rye stem rust as part of its biological weapons program, which was active from 1943-1969. These anti-agriculture biological agents were tested and found effective by the U.S. military. (Wiki)

The US Army also produced an anti-rice weapon during the 1960's.

I have read paranoid accounts online that America's giant pharmaceutical industry is just a cover for a hidden bioweapons program. I don't believe such assertions, but our industry is big enough to hide a small to midsize program.
