I have a small collection of probably fake bronzes that I bought in the Onitcha market and near Benin City. They are surprisingly sophisticated. I would say they are at the Sakha and the Viking (circa 1000 AD) level of technical development. Benin was one of the five civilizations that discovered independently agriculture and animal husbandry. I presume that they needed only a few dozen generations more and they would have been at the European level. They lost the competition, although one never knows, they are still running...

This is why I read your blog. No one in my life thinks this way. Great post.
Salut!
Why You think so Sir !? Yeah give me time and I will run like Usain Bolt! They don't reach the same level, because they are not Europeans;) they are genetically and live in environment different place, and Islam(Arabs) to helped them.Just Like Christians(Germans) to Us. It's only my NE Europeans point of view'
Civilization was and is there where they themselves taken, time is as much as it should be, not too much nor too little.
We can dream what we want, because nobody can prove our statement is right or wrong.
The picture you posted makes the soldiers seem almost benign. I must say that the carving shows some humane qualities, quite unlike the satanic Aztec art.
Ivan,
Benign they were not. To start, they used to sell their own people as slaves.
Well J, in that case I am mistaken.
No, you wrote "almost". Almost is right. Livingstone and Stanley crisscrossed Africa alone and they were feasted everywhere. I dont buy the story that the "savages" were ferocious. On the other hand, Fijians used to eat shipwrecked sailors.
thank you for your nice good posting
