The American Government's campaign ("New national minimum energy efficiency requirements for light bulbs will save more energy") to make their people aware of the need of saving energy has arrived to our shores. Israel's Ministry of Infrastructure closed its Special Fund to finance energy saving projects and transferred the budget, some 3 million US$/year, to a publicity campaign to make people use less electricity.
Instead of financing actual projects, Israeli government will now manage media campaigns urging the population to become "green". Something like the abominable campaign to save water: "Israel has no energy!". Our Minister dreams of growing tall and manly as Barak Obama and advise, with an inscrutable Chinese scientist (standing respectfully one step behind) to replace the light bulb. He envies the color of Obama's sun bronzed skin too, that is considered healthy and beautiful among we pallid Ashkenazi Jews coming from the snow covered swamps and forests of Lituania and Russia.
I dont cry for the investment fund, since it was useless as no one was able to finance any project with it. When I was the manager of a large WWTP, I tried to generate electricity from the methane gas we were burning, but the request forms and the reporting requirements were so onerous that I decided that I had no time for that and let my application to slowly expire on some dusty archive.
I do cry, however, for the corrupt mentality behind the decision to close the fund for projects and spend the money on publicity. It seems to indicate that irreality (the media world of soft "greenery" and "environment") has replaced reality (actual projects to improve energy efficiency).

I like your blog and the variety of topics that you cover. I would agree with water concerns that you have but debate blaming the US for issues with you there but I enjoyed reading your archives as well.
Best regards
We follow and imitate the USA. I dont blame the USA, I blame ourselves.
I blame ourselves.
That should change. The very fact that so many Israelis (97%?) feel that Barack Obama is against them should help the process of alienation along.
I have no idea what the other 3% of Israelis are thinking though.

What particular Israel immitate of US?
Politics (Obama), Food (Burger King), Culture (Baywatch)???
Ukraine OKs presidential run for controversial mayor - “A Ukrainian mayor who said Jews are to blame for all of the country’s problems can run for president.
Ukraine’s Central Elections Committee last week authorized the candidacy of Sergey Ratushniak, the mayor of Uzhgorod, for the Jan. 17 elections.
On Wednesday, 20 Israeli parliament members sent a letter to Ukrainian officials condemning the decision, the Jerusalem Post reported. The letter expressed concern that there is a “wave of anti-Semitism in the Ukraine that has come to a peak with the authorization of Ratushniak, the current mayor of Uzhgorod, to run for President…” - http://jta.org/news/article/2009/11/18/1009289/ukraine-approves-anti-semitic-candidate-for-president
Oh! what exactly we copy? KFC, MacDonalds, Subway, etc. to start. We dress like Americans. We have rappers copying American rappers. Our judiciary follows American judges and half of the Israelis imagine they live in the USA, demanding every right and privilege Americans have. Our African immigrants demand affirmative action and compensation for... slavery? but they were never slaves, certainly not of Israelis! We have homo marriages, invented by Americans. On the other hand, we would like to copy American enterprise, banks, factories, universities, etc.
We have homo marriages, invented by Americans.
WTF? I thought that would have been blocked by the rabbis.
On the other hand, we would like to copy American enterprise, banks, factories, universities, etc,.
I thought the Technion was already world-class, and Israel was doing well in the other areas. Are you in any way deficient?
As for the means of dress, I think that is pretty standard across the West, and thus not uniquely American.
Maybe the word "corrupting" is misleading. I mean that America seems to have adopted in many field a mentality of "the media is more important, more real, than reality". Our Minister of Infrastructure act as if the media campaign projecting his preoccupation with energy is more effective than actually doing something. In my mind that is an American concept. Maybe I am wrong, it would not be the first time.
You are at least partly correct; in the USA, for instance, spending huge amounts of money is apparently something that can be done without consequences in reality; appearing to "support health care" counts for much more, right now.
This is the economics, and politics, of the lunatic asylum and the media is substantially to blame.
Israel should beware because your margin of error is practically zero. The USA can still be milked for a few more years before it goes down (which is surely the objective).
Anon.
Appearances matter. Part of Israeli disausion springs from the projection of the image of Israel as a powerful trigger happy entity. But that's for external consumption. Energy saving campaigns should be "real".
So the question about the USA is this: will it still be perceived as strong when it is trillions of dollars in debt and its leader is travelling round the world like a beggar, asking for favours? Or will the huge military count for something?
I was recently in South Korea. I asked the table if the North Korean "Dear Leader" was scared of Obama. They are still laughing.
Anon.
Obama is perceived as a weak leader. I for one would prefer a strong American President, like Nixon.
