And if we are going to abandon these people, as we have so many others in the past, let us at least tell them, and ourselves, the truth. We didn't know what we were getting into. We don't have the stomach for a long war. We're sorry we got you into this. Your big mistake was in trusting us. You folks should have known better.

America preparing to abandon Pakistan
Pat Buchanan writes another of his cleareyed and honest notes. America, apparently, is going to abandon Afganistan and Pakistan, as did with many others allies before (He forgets to mention Hungary in 1956). He says:

Mr Buchanan as usual muddies the waters. The real issue is; is the Afghan army capable of decent sized operations against the Taliban. The evidence is that it is either incapable or more likely unwilling to fight the Taliban. And this is the return the Americans get after spending untold billions over eight years training the army, building roads and schools and hospitals. The Americans under GWB had wizened up to the fact that the Afghans are only too willing to let the US and Nato forces do the fighting while they collect the toll fees. That was the reason why GWB was letting Afghanistan slide. Ultimately the so called War on Terror, was a project to see if the putative moderate Muslims are in fact capable of standing up to the militants. The evidence seems to be that they can, but only if they themselves are directly and constantly attacked. The wiser strategy is to withdraw and let the Muslims duke it out. It is pointless to sacrifice scarce young men on an undertaking that earns no gratitude from the Muslims.
Ivan,
That is exactly what Pat Buchanan is saying. Americans no longer see a reason to be in Afganistan or Pakistan. They are losing heir will to fight. The cycle is repeating itself, their Afgan and Pakistani allies will be left alone.
