The wells in the Arava valley in Israel cannot be used for drinking because of high radioactive content. Since there is no alternative water source, they are being treated by reverse osmosis. The milching cows of Yotvatah drink radioactive water, but the milk has only traces of radioactive isotopes. When I was in the Water Authority I did a lot of work on the subject, another reason why I was considered a troublemaker. Now it appears that the problem is more severe in the other side of the border, in the Kingdom of Jordan. The analysis by Duke University of dozens of ancient wells in central Jordan has shown them to be contaminated with high levels of radiation. The cause is naturally occurring radium. The problem affects also Egypt, Libya, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.
Avner Vengosh and colleagues took samples from 37 wells in the Disi aquifer and found the water unfit for consumption. The finding comes in the wake of a massive undertaking to pump drinking water from the Disi aquifer, along Jordan's southern border, toward Amman, the capital of the country. High levels of radium in drinking water to be associated with bone cancer and leukaemia. My cousin Yossi, born and bred in Israel, suffers from leukemia. The head of Kever Benjamin´s Water Company had leukemia (she was cured by bone marrow implant). Mere coincidence.
