تهامة

Tihama al Yemen: That is the border area between Saudia and Yemen, on the Red Sea. Very hot, humid and malaria infested. It is the soft underbelly of Saudi Arabia and the smuggling route to Makkah. The population is mostly yemeni, erithrean, somali. All the Turks left after 1920, all the Jews have left in 1950 and there is no memory of them. Saudia's problem is to isolate the growing focus of unrest in Yemen from spreading to Makkah and destroy the hajj industry. As remembered, al Quaeda's basic aim was to liberate the Country of the Two Mosques, not to fight The Occident. The pic shows the Fazah mosque on the Red Sea. The veritable end of the world. I have never been there - an excellent reason to dream of visiting that God-forgotten hell-hole. DEBKA files writes:
Yemen has been on US radar for some time, certainly since al Qaeda blew up the American destroyer USS Cole in Aden harbor on Oct. 12, 2000, killing 17 American seamen. Both the CIA and the FBI have maintained a covert presence in this Red Sea country in the past year at least, along with American civilian counter terror experts and small special units. Their mission is to help President Abdullah Salah's regime to survive in the face of two insurgencies.
