New Brown Hope

Jewish and non-Jewish support for President Obama’s Middle East policies has fallen sharply since his “reaching out to the Muslim world” speech in Cairo last June, when he called Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria “illegitimate’ as well as illegal. He also called for Israel to halt all building for Jews in the same region as well as in eastern Jerusalem.

It appears that the Republican Senator-elect Brown is more popular than the President. Obama has lost the middle, and losing the middle means he is going to lose the presidency. Obama could try, for example, stop making speeches on Israel.

The Jews are still firmly married to the Democrat party, though it may be that the machers will throw Obama overboard for another candidate in 2012 - Hillary still has her eyes on the prize.

Many have speculated on why the Jews "live like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans". The answer in part is that Episcopalians themselves (upper class WASPS) can be quite liberal too, when they are educated college professor, journalist, etc. types. Then there is the Jewish repugnance at the Christian fundamentalist wing of the Republican party. And lastly, in their heads, even if they are professionals living in a wealthy suburb, Jews self image of themselves is as a downtrodden ghetto minority and so they support the party that supports downtrodden minorities. Until recently , Democrats were as pro-Israel as Republicans but in recent years an extreme left wing (of which Obama is a member) has emerged in the Democrat party which identifies with Palestinians as an oppressed 3rd world minority.

Obama is now getting very mixed advice - some people say he should "triangulate" ala Bill Clinton - turn his sails to the wind and go with prevailing currents and thus regain popularity. His supporters on the left say that he has not done enough (damage) and so he should, as in blackjack, double down and increase his bets - if the medicine is not working with the voters it is because they haven't received a big enough dose. Increase the dose until it heals them or kills them (or him). I hope he takes the latter advice so we can be done with him in 2 years.

The Massachusetts election was interesting but yesterday in Oregon the voters approved a tax increase on rich people and businesses. The idea that we can achieve a permanent majority of people willing to vote themselves benefits out of the pockets of other people is not dead.

Obama knows nothing about Israel and the Middle East. It is an insoluble problem and he should stay out of it personally. All the US can do is to try to stop an out-right war from expanding uncontrollably in the region and dragging in other powers.

Obama is the captive of propapagandists and leftwing slogan-mongers, and I think speaks with no real comprehension.

It is remarkable that we are obliged to take hinm seriously. A measure of our own idiocy.

Yes, but it is our fault for letting it happen.

I do not think he is nearly up to the job, (too arrogant, too young, much too inexperienced, except in his ability to mislead, in which he is a master) although by the end of the first term, he paradoxically might well be better qualified.

Just when the job will be denied him by the American people, who by then will be "all shook up".
