The Tel Aviv 25 Index rose 75% in 2009 and the Banking Index and Real Estate Index more than doubled over the year.

Why be at the mercy of the market? If you are long some stocks and short others, you can make money in bull or bear markets. I stumbled toward this idea of market-neutral investing last year, which is partly what prompted me to build a site to screen stocks for short selling ideas (Short Screen). One of my initial customers on the site was a Swiss professional investor named Marc Mayor, who runs a site called Inside ALPHA. He's been running a market-neutral portfolio (half long and half short) for ten years and has produced some impressive returns, without getting his head handed to him in '08 like most of the rest of us did.
Hedging?
