The Russian International Ensemble is visiting Israel and I was conscripted to the Kameri Theater. The Who is Who of Tel Aviv Russian Community was there. You have to be a rabid Russian nationalist to find romance in Shukshin's stories about those earthy, pure Russian peasants living in the Russian heartland. Since my Russian is close to nil and the translation was poor, I did not appreciate the experience. They told me that Shukshin had captured the essence of the Russian soul and his stories were full of humor and peasant wisdom. Maybe. I do know that the actresses were astonishing, leggy blondes.

It seems you picked up the main point of the story.

What is the relationship between Russian Jews and pure Russians in Israel?
When I was in Israel recently, we were treated to an excellent group of Russian tenors, accompanied by a group of very attractive, young blond Russian women on strings.
I wanted to know what their relationship with Israel was, but I couldn't get close!

The elder generation of Jewish immigrants from Russia love the Russian language and Russian literature and Russian everything except those drunken Russians.
