J, google "herald scotland bunker busting bombs" — is something up? The two Israeli planes may have been calibrating electronic equipment with NATO member Hungary.
What is it about Hungarians and Jews, anyway? I know that traditional anti-Semitism is alive and well in parts of Eastern Europe, but the case of Hungary seems to be special. Don't now why, though.
I could be wrong, but I think that in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest were centers of remarkably flourishing Jewish cultures and also remarkably flourishing vicious anti-Semitic groups and individuals among the non-Jews. Vienna was de-Nazified after WWII and Czech nationalists were allied with the Jews against the Nazis. However, Budapest was not de-Nazified and the ethnic Hungarian anti-Semites remained. Many of these blamed Jewish communists for the brutal suppression of the Hungarian revolution. However, are Hungarian anti-Semites 100% irrelevant except as potential al-Qaeda allies? J and Fjordman, do you think that fundamentalist Muslims in our world are somewhat like the Nazis in 1935 CE? The Nazis took a step backward with "Nazi physics" and savagery. The Nazis wanted to conquer Europe and eventually the world. The Muslims want to first retake Israel, Spain, Sicily, and all the lands in eastern Europe that were part of the Ottoman empire. In about 200 years, the Muslims might take over Europe, Africa, south Asia, North America, and more simply by higher average fertility. If Muslim fundamentalists banned formal education for women and limited men to Quranic study, then the average global IQ might decline by 2 points every 30 to 40 years. Fjordman and J, within about 500 years from now, could we see planet Earth totally controlled by Muslim fundamentalists and with global average IQ = 80? Are the odds of that 1000 to 1 or what? Also, am I wrong about the Hungarian anti-Semites? How are they important now? Could Hungary actually leave NATO?
Once you put aside the fever dreams of the anti-Semites, a plausible explanation emerges....

doggytwit: To be quite honest I fear for Israel's future sometimes, surrounded as it is by enemies. Frankly, the future for parts of Europe looks pretty grim, too. However, we should always have hope. The unexpected does happen. I hope we will prevail in the end, but the entire Western world is probably in for a rough ride before that happens.

Fjordman, I have never understood Kurzweil's optimism for the Technological Singularity. What is the point of human life if there are conscious AI/robots with IQs far beyond the human IQ? On the other hand, if science and technology stagnate, then won't the cause of it probably be some type of religiously-motivated book burning? Can you, J, and K meaningfully communicate with al-Qaeda members or Hungarian anti-Semites?
It seems to me that in Europe in the 1930s and perhaps also in al-Qaeda now, those stupid and/or crazy were the founding members. In a society 10% of the people might be stupid and/crazy — of these 1/2 might join the stupid/crazy movement. If the organization is successful, then the opportunists might join and bring in a total of 35% of the population. The ruling 35% might then burn enough books to establish stagnation. Perhaps the book burning could never be done on a global scale?
doggytwit - I am not an expert on this, but GPS doesn't work by "predictions" or "dead reckoning" the way you would if you were launching an artillery shell or doing old fashioned navigation with gyrocompasses. The munition or aircraft constantly receives a fix indicating its current position within a few meters by triangulation with the orbiting satellites and corrects its course if it is not in accord with the programmed path, so no test run would be necessary. But I would wager, as I said before, that this was some kind of dry run for a mission to a Shiite country where Farsi is spoken. This was all surely done with the knowledge of the Hungarian authorities, at least in terms of the routine permission for entering the airspace if not the full nature of the purpose of their mission.

K, I agree with your estimate but I want to quibble over one minor point. Civilian GPS receivers are accurate within a few meters. Military GPS receivers available to NATO countries are accurate within a few centimeters. The US military deliberately degrades the signal quality available to civilian users, hence why some national air-traffic authorities have considered building GPS-supplemental systems to improve navigation near some airports.
Oh, also GPS signals can be jammed and as such the IDF planes may have to navigate using gyroscopes for the last fourth of the route to the target site.
The bombs that Israel plans to use on its bombing run may also be gyroscopically guided instead of using GPS, in order to deal with any jamming of GPS frequencies.
Ronduck - I believe the signal is no longer degraded although that was true originally. However, I think there is some kind of augmented encrypted signal accessible only to the military which increases accuracy. IDK if Israel has access to this or not - I would suspect that even if the US does not give Israel access to this, that they have it anyway thru other means (codebreaking, espionage, etc.)
I really have high confidence in Israel's military capabilities. If and when Israel chooses to act, I would expect that they will have all the technical details well worked out in advance, far beyond what you and I know or will ever know. You can see the thoroughness that went into the Dubai assassination, which BTW has disappeared from the headlines entirely.
The Chinese government, BTW, in Soviet fashion, intentionally gives out incorrect co-ordinates for their maps - everything is off by several hundred meters. If you go to Google maps and zoom far in to say the center of Beijing and click "Map" and then "Satellite" you'll see that the 2 views do not superimpose - on the map the Forbidden City for example is to the east of where it is in the satellite view. This is entirely intentional and not a software error by Google. Try this again for Jerusalem and you'll see that the map and the satellite views correspond exactly and there's no jump.

The Israelis may be have been testing the IQ of the Hungarians by some unorthodox means, with a view to recreating the conditions in which von Neumann, and Wigner and Erdos flourished while at secondary school. It is all hush-hush, but I am at liberty to reveal to you that the Israeli brain trust stand in awe of the smarter Hungarian Jews and wish to replicate their success in Israel, a task made more urgent by the spectre of imminent racial degeneration.
