The Storks are Going Home

The winter must be ending. Millions of big birds fly through Israel to return to Europe and Russia. Early morning they circulate to gain altitude, in the early evening they land (pic).

I always thought that it was amazing that the storks that nested in the chimney of Poland wintered in Africa. Jews from the shtetl and their peasant neighbors might spend their whole life within 10 or 20 kilometers of their birth place, but the birds on their roof vacationed in Africa every year like modern day jet-setters (stopping over in Eretz Yisrael). Too bad they could not take vacation photos to show to their human friends.

They gorge on fish in local ponds. Fish farmers are losing millions to these birds.
