Something terrifying happened to the city of Detroit.
The deterioration of the economic base of the city has accelerated. There were an estimated 81,754 vacant housing units (22.2 percent of the total) in Detroit before the recession; that number increased to an estimated 101,737 (27.8 percent of the total) in 2008.What happened is population replacement. Over 90% of the city population is African.
The average price of a residential unit sold in the January through November, 2009 period was $12,439, down from $97,847 in 2003. Remaining businesses and individuals are challenging property tax assessments on parcels that have lost value and, in some cases, cannot be sold at any price.
More than half of employed city residents work outside the city limits; the metro area has the highest unemployment rate of the 100 major metro areas in the U.S.

It's gone beyond population replacement - Detroit has been mostly black for decades. It's now in the Zimbabwe phase where the new masters have no ability to maintain an advanced civilization so the black population itself flees.
The $97K house price in 2003 was never real. There was a massive scam going on in connection with the CDO market. People with no income and no jobs (NINJAs) were being given mortgages (they could often even cash out a few thousand $ out of the deal). There was never any prospect of repayment. Once the bubble collapsed housing returned to a true market level.

Detroit's mayor speaks of "shrinking" the city and bulldozing large areas that look like areas of Sarajevo after the Balkan War... There has been talk also of urban farming...

Excellent idea, Handgun! Subsistance farming is the solution. Small plots with corn, manioc, marijuana, and a few free chickens and pigs. Agricultural experts from Cuba and Zimbabwe could assist the new farmers. I wonder if water experts will be needed - maybe existing water supply infrastructure could be re-engineered. I am a competent, versatile engineer with good ideas.
Sorry J, manioc is tropical and will not grow in Detroit's harsh climate. You need local expertise to avoid such mistakes. Potatoes would grow well however. Detroit is very well watered, sitting on the Detroit River between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, so water supply should not be a problem. Chickens and pigs would be excellent. If they are bothered by wild dogs, the locals are all well armed and would have no problem shooting any pests.
In West Philadelphia there is a huge classical building in the middle of the ghetto that was once the headquarters of an insurance company (built in the early 20th century when this part of Philadelphia was still in the suburbs). It is of the highest possible quality construction, made of carved limestone with all sorts of fine detail. No expense was spared. It is boarded up now - it reminds me of how the Roman empire must have looked after the barbarians came, lighting their campfires in the middle of temples, scavenging the building materials for their huts, etc.

So you say that manioc will not grow in Detroit? Maybe you have not heard about "vernalization", a truly marvelous process discovered by the scientist Lysenko, hero of the Soviet Union, that allows to grow tropical crops in artic climates.
I also wonder about the depth of your agricultural knowledge. Does it rain less in Zimbabwe or Panama than in Detroit?
The best thing would be for the government of Detroit to hire us BOTH to conduct an investigation. We could do a pilot project on growing cassava in Detroit. It would not cost more than several hundred thousand dollars. We can obtain a Federal grant - this is certainly a "green" project that would reduce carbon emissions.

I am not bad in "grantology" - writing grant requests. But several hundred thousand dollars will not be enough. Think that the project team has to include Black Culture advisers, Diversity Balance Officers, Ebonics Translators, Detroit Indian Guides, Appropriate Agriculturalists, Cassava Afro-American Cuisine Experts, as well as Koko as Special Anti-Specieism Consultant. These highly trained specialists are very expensive.

You're absolutely right. We should add a zero or two to the grant request. You have also to include gender diversity and something for the GLBT community. They're insulted already that you forgot to include them. A few million $ is nothing in a Federal budget of trillions. Our Dear Leader Obama has told us that it's necessary to spread the wealth around.

Yes, in essence that is what happened - the bondholders were squeezed out and got a few cents on the $, the union pension rights were recognized and they got 100%. And there were no serious wage cuts in the future.
In a non-political bankruptcy, the bondholders might not have gotten much more (new owners have every incentive to screw the banks in such a situation) but there would have been a much bigger squeeze on the unions too in order to create a viable business in the future. Obama raped the banks but sent candy and flowers to the unions who caused the bankruptcy in the 1st place. The result is that the companies are STILL not viable - look what happened to British Leyland. If Obama is lucky, the 2nd bankruptcy (once the government money runs out) will happen after his administration is over. But what did you expect when we elected the US version of the Labor/Social Democrat party?

It was my understanding that Buenos Aires, at least (and B.A. accounts for maybe 1/2 or more of the total population) was populated mostly by European immigrants. The countryside may be different. I was surprised to see in the recent looting that went on in Chile (another country that imagines itself to perhaps be more European than it really is) that a large % of the lower class looters had what appeared to be Indian or mestizo features.
If Argentina is not 100% pure white , it is certainly "white enough" to have an advanced civilization and we cannot blame their failure on not having a population with enough potential for advanced skills. The US has always had a rather large minority population and this did not hold it back (at least not until recently). Rather I would blame a dysfunctional system of government, lack of honest democratic leadership, government interference in the economic sector, etc. - all the ways that the US is becoming more like Argentina.

I dont think Argentina's problems are of racial origin. It has a very large - maybe 20 million persons - pure European majority. When living there, I never felt that I was living in the margin or the perifery. Well, that was a long time ago.
