Praying before the New Year (Slichot)





Religious Jews are going up to Jerusalem to pray before the New Year. Happy New Year!

This is a spodek (means saucer in Polish). Even after the Holocaust they kept making these hats in E. Europe and they are quite expensive. The similar shtreiml is flatter. Each Hasidic sect or region has distinctive headgear so they can tell each other apart - like gang colors. Spodeks are Polish. Shtreimls are from the Austro-Hungarian territories.
