Saturday we went to the country club and watched the storks climbing the thermal air currents. Hundreds of them over my head. Pelicans will do it in a very nice order. Storks will do it in all kinds of directions as they go up. And when they get to the top of this thermal that’s when they begin to order themselves in to a formation and start to glide and can be counted easily. Somehow, I have to entertain myself.

Stork migration is an incredible thing. The storks that you are seeing now are (the descendants of) the same storks that our ancestors saw in E. Europe and the same ones that can be seen in S. Africa. Storks rely on thermals that are not present over open water so they fly over Turkey then down the coast of the Mediterranean (a western group flies over Gibraltar). Stork nests (often built on chimneys) were considered lucky so the storks were not molested by humans. Why couldn't Jews be considered lucky?

Storks are beautiful big birds. We are not.
Symbolically, Jews are never soaring birds - we are always portrayed as rodents or bugs, even in literature written by fellow Jews (Kafka, Spiegelman, etc.)
Only with the founding of modern Israel do Jews again soar in the sky - now we control the very heavens above the Middle East and every Muslim from Gaza to Teheran knows that a flying Jew may pinpoint righteous vengeance on his head at any moment.
Why do Arabs make such lousy pilots? Is it just their general stupidity and cowardice? I say it is more - they are mentally earthbound in the pre-scientific era and cannot be the masters of the air until they fully accept modernity deep in their essence. Even if an Arab puts on a veneer of modernity, inside he is like the Egyptian villagers conscripted into the Egyptian Army in '67 who, when forced to flee from Zahal, threw away their boots and ran barefoot as they were accustomed to.
