Turkish Delights

Turkey has rebuilt itself and is seeking hegemony in its former empire that ranged from Syria to Persia. These days it faces a decision on President Bush's NATO missile shield, which has been portrayed as a safeguard against a possible ballistic missile strike from Iran. Turkey worries that supporting the shield could damage relations with its neighbors. So Turkey is defining the NATO radar system as a defense against ... Israel. Very bad.

The US should have soured out on Turkey in 2003 when it refused to allow an invasion into Iraq from southern Turkey. Turkey is a lost cause as far as the intentions of the neocons are concerned. By this I mean the development of a Western-oriented polity with matching temperament in that part of ther world. I am certain that the secularists will fight their corner gamely and for a long time as similar factions have done in Syria and Lebanon, but being allied to the West and in particular Israel is of no use to them in this new dispensation.

The US defence policy makers are fixated apparently for big budget procurement reasons on the toothless and aging Russian bear, they'll change their focus soon enough when the get their fancy planes and ships.
