Godless Nation

Czechs are the most godless nation in the world, 90% or so do not believe in the existence of God. On the other hand, you cannot walk two steps in downtown Prague without hitting some oversized and overdecorated church or Cathedral full of statues of armed fighters and dying saints. All Czech wars were about nano-differences in religion, nothing else could move them to slaughter their neighbors. The old Karol Bridge over the Voltava River is over-decorated with bronze reliefworks and statues. Godless Czechs and Japanese tourists (another unbelieving nation) never let an opportunity go without caressing the frozen metal and formulate a wish, half-hoping for the miracle.

Do atheists have children? The Czech birthrate of 1.2 is nearly the lowest of the world. This means in 40 odd years the population will reduce by about 40%.

I saw few children or old people on the streets, but it was very cold and rainy. So different from Israel!

Maybe the air fares are good this time of year and the crowds in the museums are smaller but one certainly doesn't visit Prague in late November for the weather. That the sun (if you could see it at all) sets by 4PM doesn't help but add to the gloominess. What did you expect?

Still this is the climate that our ancestors endured for almost 2 millenia. There are some upsides - my recent blood test found that I was doing well on Vitamin D (this is a current faddish obsession by US Drs.). Lack of pigment in the skin means that your body can produce enough Vitamin D to survive in minimal sunlight.

I am glad you are well. I am rather skeptical about the vitamin D thing, since the eskimo and other Arctic peoples are swarthy yet healthy. Maybe eating crude fish makes the difference. People in Prague never see the sun as we know it, but the Czech government is investing a lot of money in solar energy.

I believe the Eskimos are (in evolutionary terms) rather recent immigrants to the north, only 6,000 years. I recall reading that a shift in skin color would take a long time - that it took on the order of 100,000 years for our African ancestors to "bleach" out to European whiteness.
