A veritable civil war is being waged in Ciudad Juarez, which is the twin city of El Paso in the USA. Three thousand persons have been killed last year. Yesterday gangsters opened automatic weapons fire on a soccer game, senselessly killing seven bystanders. It is like Medellin a decade ago.

Cuidad Juarez is a victim of mindless globalisation. James Baker in the 80s sought to counter the rise of Japanese industry by creating a coprosperity zone with Mexico and rest of Latin America. What resulted is the impoverishment of the Mexicans and the subsequent dumping of their poor and the criminal class onto the US. In this toxic atmosphere the Aztec gods have returned. Some countries simply cannot handle the stresses of the New World Order. Right now, this city must be the most terrifying place to live on earth. I agree with uncle Buchanan and the junkies that it would be far better to legalise some drugs to try and kill off the gangs.

Cokeheads are impervious to reason there is no use looking there. The Prohibition ended up greatly strengthening the Mob, this looks like a reprise. It would have been better to leave the Mexicans to their old ways, but the globalisers cannot leave well enough alone.

I don't know what NAFTA has to do with Mexican drug wars. AFAIK, cocaine was not included as a free trade item.
Diaz made the diagnosis in the 19th century and it hasn't changed:

Being estranged from God ( or morality, whatever you call it) while at the same time being close to the massive wealth of the US is indeed a lethal combination. The latter raises the stakes in the game, the former insures that the game will be played brutally and without rules.
It is only a matter of time before the territorial boundaries of each gang are fixed and the mass killings can end. The same process went on with the Mafia in the US until a stable arrangement was reached. In the past the government was part of the spoils system and could mediate between the gangs but by placing themselves in opposition they are no longer in a position to mediate and the gangs must each fight for territory.
