Hercules in Germany

The German Minister of Agriculture poses as a man of the soil, a rude farmer, with a big cigar and a desdainful attitude towards the Greens. He likes to talk in parables. "For the fifth labor, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to clean up King Augeas' stables. Now King Augeas owned more cattle than anyone.

So the muscleman tore a big opening in the wall of the cattle-yard and then he made another opening in the wall on the opposite side of the yard. Next, he dug trenches to the river which flowed nearby. He turned the course of the river into the yard and let the rushing waters to flush out the Augean stables."

He concluded saying something like this: It is possible that EU's strict environmental rules against river pollution with animal husbandry wastes are not always enforced in Greece. But I shall not allow happen this in Germany.

Germans are funny people. They had no problem enslaving and killing most of my family but now they protest for freedom for chickens. I suppose this is a step in the right direction but I fear that they have an extremist streak beneath their stolid exteriors. Their methodical nature makes them execute on their beliefs to the utmost degree. The Stasi was more organized and penetrated the society more thoroughly that the KGB did in Russia. If you take things too far in one direction you can take them too far is some other direction as well.

The intelligence and educational level of the German public is very high. I cant imagine any other agriculture minister even mentioning the Augean stables myth and hope to be understood.

Most terrorists are also highly intelligent and educated - look at Atta. Education and intelligence not only does not prevent extremism, it encourages it. The poor and uneducated don't worry about freedom for chickens or the solution to the Jewish question or whatever.
