First, in Israel, one is only free to be a Jew according to the dictates of the ultra-Orthodox rabbinical establishment in regards to marriage, family law and death. This is not trivial, and as the ultra-Orthodox fraction of the Israeli population increases, their stranglehold will only expand to other facets of daily life. One is actually more free to dissent from Orthodox dictates in the "exile" because they are not part of the establishment of state.
