This is New York!

The morning papers say that Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been arrested in New York for trying to rape a hotel maid. According to New York laws, a person is guilty of sexual abuse in the first degree when he or she subjects another person to sexual contact by forcible compulsion. Sexual abuse in the first degree is a class D felony (2 to 7 years of imprisonment.) In French bedroom farses, the maid is always available to fulfil a man's fantasy. But this is New York. He is in trouble.

This episode will undoubtedly improve his chances with the French electorate.

Probably, this is the most likely explanation for it.

Alternatively, perhaps the maid got confused between "bonds" and "bondage", and misinterpreted his "advances".

Agree.

(1) The French hate American humorless puritanism.

(2) Every French (and Italian) politician has to prove his manliness.

Strauss-Kahn did the right political move, now he has to make from this incident an international scandal of how the Americans are treating him for exercising the right of a Frenchman to fondle a maid.

On the other hand, perhaps he did not offer her a big enough "tip".

As always, you you may have understood the situation better than most. Clearly, Sir, you are a man of world, a man of experience. That is the best explanation, she was not satisfied with the tip and made a scandal. These things DO HAPPEN. Moreover, I daresay it is standard blackmailing procedure in hotels and rich clients who are known to be desperate to avoid scandals. He should have paid. Bad judgment.

Yes, but there was more to my comment than that.

Ah...! A double entendre...!

I'm afraid so. A weakness of mine.
Sincere apologies.
