The title of The Economist "The traditional family is now the preserve of a minority" seems to say that there is some kind of unjust discrimination going on against the poor and the colored, forbidding them to marry and form stable families. Some kind of apartheid law that preserves the status and advantages of a "traditional family" to a privileged minority.
I dont blame the young journalist framing reality in the PC "discrimination" mold. He grew up in post-Marxist Britain where he was not properly indoctrinated and ignores that the family is an outgrowth of private property. As private property is fast concentrating in a few hands, the institution of family disappears among the property-less masses and becomes restricted to a small minority. Friedrich Engels in "The Origin of the Family":
Reconstructing the past history of the family, we arrive at a primitive stage when unrestricted sexual freedom prevailed within the tribe, every woman belonging equally to every man and every man to every woman.No private property and humans revert to their primitive state. In post-Capitalist America, where the masses own no property, the institution of the family is losing its meaning ("gay marriage") and is disappearing. After a lifetime of ridiculing Engels, it appears that this goyische kopf and not Karl was the real brains behind the Communist Manifesto. Call it serial polyandry or whatever, sexual freedom is almost complete, thus Communist utopia cannot be far away.

F Engels is a representative of a common Victorian type, men and women who in truth would have liked to sleep around, but lacking courage to go against the societal conventions, invent scientific sounding theories to justify free-love and other deviancies. His theory is of course a joke as any observer of chimpanzees and gorillas in the wild can attest. The biggest and fiercest ones have all the females to themselves, leaving the luckless ones to form roving bands of vagrants. For that matter in the demimonde of black ghetto life, it is the most violent or capable members who have access to the better looking females. As a Marxist, Engels should have read up his Darwin. The patriachy where the males have a stake in the future of the tribe by having exclusive access to one or two women is the basis of civilisation. For otherwise why should the beta males bother? The roissy fools think that they can all be alpha males, but it is the beta males who having invented writing, tools, bridges, medicines and airconditioning who have made modern life comfortable and safe.

The ideal of the traditional family with the father and mother at the head of the table remains. This is what the masses after the age of forty secretly yearn for. Much as I would like to maintain that free sex is zipless, the evidence proves otherwise.

The poor in America never had any assets but family structures were intact - the government became the provider of last (or first) resort so women no longer had to put up with drunken smelly men.

Isnt it amazing that the richest country's citizens have no assets? It is Communism by another name. The concentration of ownership is amazing. People with no private property have no investment in the system, they will not defend the capitalists. How can one visualize that large mass of alienated individuals with no assets nor families?
People do have assets, just not a liquid kind - they are in the form of entitlements to government jobs, pensions, union jobs, annuity settlements from person injury lawsuits, even private jobs. These are all (semi) guarantied income streams which can support credit which in turn can support car payments, a mortgage, etc. So people are invested in the system - they just don't have the discipline not to spend every cent of their current cash income and part of their future income as well.
Of course, for example, the promises made to state government employees for their pensions far exceed the ability of these governments ever to pay, but for now everyone pretends that everything is fine and the band plays on.

Exactly. The grain dole received by a Roman citizen was that kind of income stream. Totally dependent on the workings of the State.
If you have your money invested in fiat currency or instruments denominated in fiat currency, you are equally dependent on the state. Even if you have real estate and gold, you depend on the State to keep others from seizing it from you . No man is an island. God help us if the mechanisms of the State break down.

The root cause of most Americans lack of assets is moral breakdown. Prior to the 1980's mot Americans saved part of their income, it is only in the last 30 years that Americans stopped saving their money.
