a group of communists in Germany of the 1930's who woke up to the fact that the masses were not behaving on cue, despite the worsening economic situation. They decided Marxism needed updating and essentially advocated a change from the crude, stupid economic rhetoric to the more subtle and effective machinations designed to infiltrate the bastions of Western Culture, ie the family, the media and the Academe.I think anon is wrong in defining the phenomenon as a conspiracy. Reality is more complex. There was never a "Frankfort School" as such, only a diffuse philosophical movement or environment. (I was corrected by anon.: There was a formal academic institution called the Frankfurt School, with paid researchers and a modernist concrete building. This being a Learning Diary, I thank those who improve me so I can learn from my mistakes.). When it sprouted "Cultural Marxism", it was rejected and combatted by all Communist Parties in the world. This ideological environment of Pre-WW2 Central European intelligentzia affected also the National Socialist movement (which had much ideological affinity with the German Communist Party).
Curiously, the Nazis did not find this to their taste (J's Comment: I disagree. The National Socialist movement - which was Socialist and Marxist ! - also moved within the general revolutionary intellectual environment of Pre-WW2 Central Europe. It was only the Jewish intellectuals who had to leave Germany, and not because of their ideas but because they were Jews. Most found refuge in Palestine, only a few succeeded in immigrating to the USA)..., so most of them escaped to the US where they conned the unsuspecting locals into extending a charitable welcome; especially, I believe, in a particular university in New York.
Once esconced in the comfort and security of the US, they set about destroying it, and the West in general, with what they describe as "The long march through the institutions". This has resulted in what is known today as "Cultural Marxism:, also known as "Political Correctness".
Among the many perfidies they promulgate can be included the trashing of the nuclear family; open borders; indoctrination of the young; undermining free speech rights; the ridicule of white identity while actively promoting other ethnic identities in opposition to whites; feminism; erosion of public morals; humiliation and weakness of western countries; large scale guilt-mongering; and on and on.
Most of the German Jewish intellectuals did not move to the USA (they couldnt, because of America's strict quotas against Jewish refugees) but to Palestine. Here they had no influence at all, except maybe in architecture. Intellectually and politically they were erased by the very hard Zionist Left that dominated the Sochnut (a pre-State forerunner of the Israeli government) that had no time for philosophical elucubrations of the despised "yekkes". Eventually, Israeli left (aka the labour party) adopted the Political Correctness doctrine, but not because the post-mortem influence of the yekkes but because of its aping the Americans. Heaven is mercyful and the rotten Israeli Left has been displaced by the political line of Vladimir Jabotinsky. Should these people (widely called the Likud) go soft, a harder movement is already waiting at the wings to take their place. They are the religious zionists, Mizrahi, whose youth is spearheading the Jewish settlement in Samaria. Should they spoil (I see signs of it - many embrace the Earth aka "organic" and "green" holisticism), then the hard core (pic) will crawl out of the crevices and lead the nation. A step further to the right, impatient, are those who are working on bringing the Messiah (I am not kidding). They go by the Bible. Literally. It is not the Jews that keep the Shabbath, the Shabbath (the Bible) keeps the Jewish people.

So I'm to believe that this small group of writers whom almost no one ever read *caused* the proud West to start flagellating itself with self-loathing and judgements of moral unworthiness that causes our welcoming of takeover by the 3rd world?
But our consciences facing the implications of 3 centuries of ruling most of humanity - against its will - didn't legitimately invoke the soul's golden rule consciousness - our ethical core - that informs our better selves, causing, dare I suggest it, feelings of an unworthiness resulting from having treated others as we'd simply hate to be treated?
I note that the *fact of colonialism* contrasts with fables from some books no one really read or reads chiefly by virtue of being something VERY REAL. As in REALLY HAPPENED. Generation after painful generation. The human mind/heart/soul understands what this means, and the higher instinct for reciprocity with its desire to live in shared goodwill recognizes the hated violent hegemony. Deep within (the civilized, at least), all the bogus justifications (dehumanizing etc) don't fly. Just as rule by Europe was the leading fact of life on Earth for a long time, the inner reckoning among the cultures that so ruled resonates very deeply.
In the face of that, any who explored ideas that resonated with this were reflecting what was afoot, and weren't the essential force behind it. It exists, as it should (indeed what would we be if it didn't?).
This force is the reason the West rejected continuing colonialism - purely on ethical grounds, not those of "self-interest," as with slavery, too.
Now, when one has made a boo boo, there is often a sense of overcorrection, of reticence to risk repeating patterns that even remind one of the error. And of strengthening patterns that seem like they will help prevent a backslide.
I rather see a strong pattern of "too much of a good thing becomes bad" in multiculti self-abnegation. Overdose.

Really? Is this why, when the boot of the Roman empire was removed from their necks, the European colonies rejoiced in their newfound self-determination and founded Postroman Studies departments? Or the reason that when the Abbasid Califate collapsed, its former subjects rejoiced and cast off the hated colonizer's burden of Islam?
Colonialism is natural, and, if done right, is far less despised by its subjects than an incompetent and corrupt native regime. It's always a minority of power-hungry rabblerousers grousing about oppression and self-determination.

The Frankfurt School and their disciples have done much damage to academia in the United States. Many of our universities are now hotbeds of anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, antisemitism and anti just about everything traditionally American. If you don't believe me, then look at the campus speech codes. The FIRE website documents the problem. Much of this is an outgrowth of the "critical studies" movement that sprang from the Frankfurt School. Critical Studies also provides a portal for universities to accept marginally qualified minorities. For example UCLA Law School has a "Critical Race Studies" program. The qualifying LSAT and GPA scores are much lower than the regular law school. UCLA needed to do this because up-front favoritism on the basis of race became illegal through a public referendum.
My daughter went to an Ivy League school and tried to find a history course that didn't bash America. She couldn't. The pernicious ideas from the Frankfurt school have spread throughout America like a bacillus. The whole point of these Frankfurt School ideas was to rot away western values and make the West more willing to accept socialism. While not formally a member of the school, the Hungarian Stalinist György Lukács was one of the principal architects of the critical movement. His use of "reification" is now a dominant mode of thinking among elites in the West.
Ideas matter. If we don't push back our civilization will be greatly diminished.

I am not seeing new ideas emerging from the West but from China. The meritocracy they have instituted is remarkable. It is not important if the cat is white or black, only that it catches mice. Why the West is fixated on the cat's color?

I remember well the 1980s and how Japan was supposed to be the future. Remember "knowledge engineering" and "expert systems?" These were the "new ideas" from the 1980s that have now vanished without a trace. Japan hit the wall in 1989 and has never recovered.
