What Germans Think

Der Spiegel publishes in English an article unusually anti-American. Says:
The word "West" used to have a meaning. It described common goals and values, the dignity of democracy and justice over tyranny and despotism. Now it seems to be a thing of the past. There is no longer a West, and those who would like to use the word -- along with Europe and the United States in the same sentence -- should just hold their breath. By any definition, America is no longer a Western nation.
The point is that only Europe aka Deutschland is West and America is a mulatto Third World "banana republic", firmly ruled by an "elite". The article resonates something in my memory.

Spiegel says America is not liberal and multi-cultural-mulatto enough.

Only more liberalism can save Europe.

Bashar Assad becomes his father and The Economist weeps for Syrian democracy which will bless the earth.

Bloodier still

President Bashar Assad is stopping at nothing to crush the protests against his regime. But the protesters have still not been deterred

The ferocity of the all-out assault on Hama has stirred particular outrage. The city has a special resonance because Mr Assad’s father, Hafez, who ruled from 1970 until his death in 2000, shelled whole districts while crushing an Islamist revolt in 1982, leaving some 20,000 civilians dead. In today’s upheaval, however, Hama has been a model of peaceful protest. Except for one bloody Friday in early June, government forces had stayed on the city’s outskirts, while protesters virtually ran the city, protecting it with a ring of barricades. The hope was that, in the age of YouTube and Facebook, the regime would avoid repeating the horrors of 1982.

That can no longer be guaranteed. The regime now seems determined to crush the street protests at all costs, while rallying support among its most loyal constituents: the Alawite minority of 10% to which Mr Assad belongs; the Christians (another 10%); the army; and the business class of Damascus and Aleppo, which has done quite well out of the Assad regime.

Western and Arab governments have plainly failed to persuade Mr Assad to change his ways or open meaningful talks with the protesters, though he held a fruitless “dialogue” which no genuine opposition figures attended. The Russians have altered their tone since the assault on Hama, calling Mr Assad’s use of force “unacceptable”. The European Union has increased the number of Syrians under sanctions. Turkey, a vital trading partner, has been increasingly critical. President Barack Obama is expected to call for Mr Assad to step down. Italy withdrew its ambassador. The UN Security Council finally issued a “presidential statement” which condemned the Syrian regime. All such gestures have so far been in vain.

Der Spiegel is a the forefront of the de-Europeanization project in Germany.

This article is rich, indeed, coming from them.

Are they 'under new management', by any chance?

They should be.

Anon.

The West? That's us.

Der Spiegel thinks the Germans are THE West. They are Europe. Them alone. America and the rest are bastards.

The comment about Obama (did you notice?) is "rich".

".... respect for the country's highest office was sacrificed long ago. The fact that Barack Obama is the country's first African-American president may have played a role there, too."

Rich.

I was in Germany last month and was shocked by the seeming arrogance and sneering quality everyone seemed to have about them. People were not nice and seemed to lack tact. It came back to me that in the last two centuries Germans were famous precisely for lack of tact and arrogance, and I thought *theyre still like that! two world wars later they havent changed a bit!*, and *I can easily see these people causing trouble again. They have contempt for everyone but themselves*.

Of all the peoples of Europe the Germans seem least defeated and least to have shed the aggressive impulse. LOL, maybe they will end up masters of Europe in the end after all.

Hamburg is a modern city, after all.

They already rule Europe with unsinkable euro. The Reich lives on in Brussels.

...arrogance and sneering quality...

Well described. It is their national character. The British people also has much of the same. Yet consider that arrogance is not a crime and they work hard and are successful. I dont think they are interested in ruling Europe anymore.
