Warning to Readers in California

I ordered some textbooks from Amazon and received the following warning:
Please be aware that items in this order may be subject to California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act. If any items in this order are subject to that Act, the seller of that item has elected to pay any fees due on your behalf.
So if you are reading this blog in California, please be aware that YOU dear reader may be subject to California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act but I have elected NOT to pay any fees that you may be subject to that Act.

California has done everything possible to encourage businesses to leave that state and they have been very successful. Recently the California legislature passed a special law in an attempt to collect more taxes from Amazon, in any case where Amazon had "affiliates" in California. Affiliates are small mom and pop businesses with links to Amazon on their web pages. Amazon's response was to end it's affiliate program in Cal. Now the Cal. govt still collects no taxes from Amazon, but these small businesses have lost the referral fees that they used to collect. Some have even left the state so that they can continue to collect the fees.

In the old days, when there were high fixed cost investments in things like steel mills, businesses were captive to regulators who could continue to tighten the rack of regulations more and more, but nowadays businesses and individuals (especially the most dynamic ones) are free to flee to lower regulation jurisdictions. This results in a vicious cycle where those left behind are the ones who are more dependent on government - government employees, welfare recipients, the elderly, etc.

As the ancient Greeks knew, once the demos gets it greedy hands on the money tree, the monkeys will shake it for all its worth.
