Euphoria in Ehad HaAm Street

The announcement that Europe's leaders decided to follow the despised Americans and provide ilimited guarantee to European banks is causing euphoria in Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. My MBA daughter felt it coming - a week ago she mentioned some losing company's stock. Today I sold it with 10% profit. I tried to give her a Krugerrand but she didnt accept it. She never saw one. I'd like her to focus on a baby and not on the stock exchange. I bought DESKAS aka Discount Investments.

The animal shown is a springbok.

It is shown running, but its more typical move is strange vertical jump (the "spring" in Dutch), also called "pronking", which is meant to convey high levels of fitness to chasing predators, to persuade them to attack a different animal.

The performance of gold would suggest they rather show a 'pronk' on the back of the K-rand; many people think we are only half way up the bull market in gold.

If I were a predator, those vertical jumps would make me think that the springbok went crazy and instead of running away from me, tries to escape upwards. I would judge it to be an easy prey.

Are they still making krugerrands or new Mandela coins? I was thinking to give her a Zimbabwe Mandela coin but I am waiting for the new Malema coin.

I don't think they will destroy what is a very successful brand by changing the name.

Malema, of course, as head of the ANC Youth League, has promised to nationalize the mines (as well as confiscate white-owned farmland).

If Malema succeeds in becoming President, it would signal an acceleration on the road to a Zimbabwe-like endgame. I think there are too many vested interests to permit this to happen.

We'll see.

German Jews circa 1936 - "There are too many vested interests to permit this to happen."

Ugandan Indians circa 1972 - "There are too many vested interests to permit this to happen."

Rhodesian whites circa 1987 - "There are too many vested interests to permit this to happen."

Etc.

Don't count it - between vested interests and insane fanatics, fanatics win every time. Fanatics don't worry about rational calculations or whether their behavior is self-defeating in the long run. It's NOT self defeating if you talk about the Generalissimo in charge anyway - for him expropriation is always a good deal (all those goodies!) no matter how much it destroys the larger economy.

I wish I could be more optimistic but there's a very long and sad track record of things turning out poorly in such situations in the long run, human greed being what it is.

It comes down to who's going to stop him, since if he isn't stopped, it's going to happen.

Let's look at who might be arraigned against him:

Zuma, or some anointed successor
Zuma's 6 wives
Moderate, intelligent blacks
Zulus
Anglo whites, and big business
Coloureds
The City of London
Wall Street
Anglo-American,Xstrata,RTZ,BHP etc
White Farmers, mainly Afrikaners
Indians in Natal
Israel
Even the "International Community"

"Will no-one rid me of this pestilential priest?"

Let's hope it can be managed in a civilized manner.

Zuma's six fat wives are Malema's most dangerous enemies. I wouldn't wish to walk in a dark alley and meet them.
