Fear of Books

On the worst night of London rioting every shop in Clapham Junction was ransacked - except one. The bookshop.

Simon, the manager of camping shop Blacks, watched it all from an upstairs window, hiding in terror as hundreds of looters plundered his shop and the street: "They smashed our window, ripped the plasma TVs off our walls, took all our jackets and rucksacks. I was horrified. But Waterstone's, directly opposite us was untouched."

The Opposition accused the Government for this failure of British education - the youth does not read books or read at all. I had a teacher who used to urge us: "Agarren los libros que no muerden" (Have no fear, books dont bite). Fifty years later I am getting his meaning: some people actually fear books! They may bite you!

Only I think that the media paints British youth in colors too black when in fact they are intellectuals with very deep respect for the printed word. They would never harm a book!

If only they could develop similar phobias for Nike Air trainers and video games.

"..in colors too black..."

Ironically, the British media went out of its way to photograph and display the white segment of the rioters, rather than the many, many persons of color, so as to educate anyone who might be so stupid and wicked to have thought that race might be a factor in the propensity to riot.

But I know what you mean.

There is only one thing that worries me. I am going to London next December and most bus drivers in London are Nigerians. According to my calculations, two store buses a bad idea, they have high center of gravity and are inherently unstable and difficult to manage. And they drive in the wrong side of the street! Having survived the terrifying Lagos - Apapa experience, do you think I have a chance in London? What is the record of the African segment of humanity in motor accidents?

I think you will probably survive to tell your grandchildren about it, but you should, to be wise, take out life insurance.
