KADIMA means Forward, from the Semitic root K.D.M. = the East. In the bible one faces East and going forward is going eastward. To progress is going East להתקדם. To be promoted לקדם is to be sent to the East. Going West is going back, so the Mediterranean is called ים התחתון the sea behind. South is ימין - the right hand, North is שמל - left hand. The concept of "Orientation" also comes from finding the East. Funny.

How do you square that with the expression "ימי קדם" which means the exact opposite?
In the West, due to the traditional orientation of maps, North is UP.
