The book covers the first years of Koko, and ends just before she started betting on horses on her own account, made her tax-free millions, hired Dr. Murphy to remake her as a Nordic beauty and exert her influence behind the curtains of world finances and politics. Few know that it was no other but Koko who discovered Bin Laden's hideout (she followed the dangerous porn road of Central Asia under the nom-de-guerre Myra Breckenridge).

Gore Vidal is not only a flaming homosexual but also fiercely anti-American (he grew up on the inside of the American Democrat political aristocracy and saw how it was rotten to the core). But he is highly intelligent and wickedly funny too. I hate him as a person but love him as a writer (some of the best writers are the worst humans).
In general we have this expectation that being a genius or famous makes you a good person when in fact the opposite is often true - to know these people is not to love them. Jobs was such a crazy perfectionist that he would insult the service staff in restaurants, send an item back 10 times until it met his standard, reject medical procedures on the grounds that the medical devices being used were not up to his aesthetic standards (when the poor nurse had nothing to do with the design of the IV bag), etc. In short, he was a meshuganeh.

Myra Breckenridge and Myron are two of the funniest camp novels of all times. He writes extremely well. I bought and tried to read his later production but cannot undedrstand his inside political jokes. In his later novels men are weak and America is managed by intrigant women or homosexuals. He was there so must know, but I find it bizarre.
