One more step toward one Europe. Merkel said there was "no alternative to treaty change" which would codify budgetary discipline in the eurozone. "Rules must be respected. Respect for them must be supervised. Their violation must have consequences," she said.
One could suspect that the Germans are prolonguing the crisis in order to force the small European countries to seek refuge in a fiscal union. Which means loss of sovereignty. It is a considerable political achievement: Europe united without war.

It is becoming clear that the EU nations are going to lose their independence and become some kind of Prussian union a la Bismarck. It may be for good.
It will not work. It is an absurd idea.

Germans have the industry and ability to maintain their living standards. The other Europeans do not want to work as hard, yet are told to aim for the same standard of living. The whole business is unsustainable. Frau Merkel is drinking too much.

Bismarck did it. Merkel and Schauble need a good war to do it, economic crisis is not enough.

It is hard to figure out what is actually going on in the minds of people like Merkel and Sarkozy. Do they seriously think they can control the work ethic and morality of people in Southern Europe? Actually supervise tax collection in these places? Do they really think they can just eradicate their debts as if nothing had happened?
And when national sovereignity in Southern Europe has been given up, what do they have in mind for these places? Mass immigration?
Are they sane? Is anyone sane?

They do believe in the perfectability of human nature. Southerners can be tought to shower once a day and arrive punctually to the job.
Southern Europe becomes a custodial state, that's the only way this is going to work if it works at all.
The UK is right to stay out of it.
