Spiritual Progress
I met the Zazen shosu at the "By the Way" restaurant on Route 4 near Raanana Tzafon. He was contemplating a large club sandwich.
- Master, it is the third day that my mind is working on zazen and I feel that I am not progressing.
- Progress! like hastening the coming of the Messiah?
- Yes, like in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress or Saint Augustine's City of God.
- There is no progress in zazen.
- Three days I am non-stop walking and learning. Did I move ahead?
- In zazen, there is only sincerity and persistence. Objectively, you have been walking and learning three days, which is the measure of your zazen progress and your sincerity.
- Shall I be nearer to enlightment a year from now?
- No. You are complete now and will be complete then.
- Shosu, without progress, nothing is worth doing.
- You are getting the idea. Now keep on walking and learning. I'll be merging with this sandwich.
