HaAretz April 27, 2012 commemorates the 40th anniversary of Kibbutz Metzer's "Bridging Action". The collective built a bridge of books between the Metzer and the Arab village of Messer (pic) as an act aimed at creating a bridge of culture between two not-so-friendly neighbors.
Those were the days of the Oslo Agreement with Yasser Arafat, soon followed by a murderous Intifada. Reciprocating the gesture, the Arabs visited one night Metzer, killing a family with their kitchen knives.
What our leftists were thinking, we know. They dreamt that by offering their most precious posessions, books, their neighbors would have to admit the sincerity of their good will and love. I can only imagine what the amazement of the fellahin of Messer: What are these Jews doing now? Only yesterday they were begging goat milk! By some magic they created that large plastics factory that is making them unimaginably wealthy. Why are they spreading books near our fields? The Jews are not stupid! They must be casting a secret spell on us, or it must be another of their clever tricks, we cannot know but surely they are up to no good.
Forty years later, Jewish leftist mudheads are continuing with their suicidal bridgebuilding acts towards our neighbors. They have learnt nothing. We are lucky that - time being - they are powerless in the opposition.

Besides being incredibly stupid and naive, even in leftist terms, doesn't this constitute a desecration of books? Books are repositories of knowledge, not bricks. Once you have put them in the mud, they are worthless for their intended purpose.

The Palestinians should have made peace with the old Socialist Zionists. Israel is increasinly run by white supremacist Russian Jews and fanatical Haredi. They will be more ruthless at negotiation table.
Not only as at the negotiating table.
Anon.
It is said that the "Palestinians" (a non-existent nationality anyway) never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. This of course relates to the general Arab fantasy mentality - everything will be great in paradise, no matter how miserable your existence is now. So in their terms, any compromise short of the maximal demands makes no sense. If anyone compromises, he is a traitor and has to die, so even the more sensible ones are afraid to make compromises.

Those Zionist Socialist idealists wrote poems about international worker solidarity while emptying Arab villages, the Russian immigrants vomit when hear the world "international worker anything" and prefer bulldozing illegal Arab settlements. I am a bit cynical, those old Russian socialists said what had to be said and did what had to be done.
The old Zionists were hard men and realists. A revolution is not a dinner party. The modern poseur leftists think it IS a dinner party. People like this are a danger to themselves and others and must be kept as far as possible from the levers of power.

The Russians and Haredi will do more than is needed. The longer the Palestinians wait to settle the worse they will be treated down the line.
"I am a bit cynical, those old Russian socialists said what had to be said and did what had to be done."
We already had this argument before.
This is precisely the reason why I argued the Netanyahu is a very egoistic person. He says what is good for Bibi not for the country. To project the image of the savior. The defender. The strong providential leader.
And does hmmmm not clear what he does, except branding himself as a strong leader - the sort of branding Adolf himself used. I don't compare Bibi with that murderous psychopat, just underline that they use similar political marketing tools. They are very good for internal consumption, but are defective outside. And dangerous.
The guy created a siege atmosphere, everyone close to the strong leader etc etc.
It makes me laugh, but probably it's a little bit easier to see from the outside.
Those lefties you laugh of were the strong ones. You just have to look at what people do not to dissect their public discourse.
The wise and competent ones talk softly but act tough when they have to. As tough as needed.
But they always always talk softly, kindly. And they have tears in their eyes when the need arises. It's not weakness. Usually is called being smart/wise.
Probably the civic body in Israel is changing. Decades ago his kind of political marketing would not have led towards power.
Maybe the country is integrating in the region and starts resembling its neighbours. The sofisticated approach of the "old Russian socialists" is now incomprehensible for todays electorate.
In conclusion. He is obviously smart. But what is good for Bibi is not necessarily good for the country.
40th anniversary? I didn't know the Oslo agreements were around in 1972.
