Elizabeth Warren trying to pass as a Cherokee means that she feels that her WASPness is a social burden. Nietzsche's reversion of values in action: The new aristocracy is African slave descendants and Plains Indians. My mother was also a blue eyed blonde with high cheekbones - are we Cherokee too? If it means a full scholarship at Harvard. then my daughter sure is. I have documents from Hungary proving it. Old J family lore.

"This is disgraceful. She makes me want to puke. I am a true Native American Indian, and it makes me sick that this crazy woman says she is Native, yet has never lived a day in her life like the we do."
Another:
"As a trueblood Jew, I had to pass a painful ceremony to receive an Indian name and be accepted as an American Indian. She never filled the application form to be rejected." (I just made that up).
Reality check for your daughter. Warren didn't get a full scholarship to Harvard. Her "status" helped her get a professorship. Harvard lowers its admissions standards for undergraduate applicants from "underrepresented" minority groups, but it doesn't formally reduce the tuition just on that basis.
While there is no "formal" reduction in tuition, the top 20 schools in America have a problem, especially when it comes to blacks: Because the black mean IQ is 1 full SD below white (and maybe 2 below Ashkenazi Jewish), Harvard etc. has no problem filling its ranks with plenty of Jews (maybe 25% of the class) and Asians and turning away even more , but the entire pool of black students scoring above 2100 on the SAT (the score level required for whites to get in) is only a few hundred people (and most of those are West Indian, Nigerian, half-Kenyan, etc. and not the descendants of US slaves for whom affirmative action was ostensibly created). And yet EACH Ivy League school would like several hundred blacks of their own to diversify themselves suitably. So (in addition to lowering their standards), the most well qualified blacks are recruited like crazy by these schools and you betcha that this includes a generous scholarship package.
Elizabeth Warren went to Rutgers, a low ranked law school. There are exactly zero other Ivy League law school professors who graduated from Rutgers and only because Warren was an "Indian too" was she considered for a teaching post despite her lack of credentials.

I'm well aware of affirmative action and the data about race differences in IQ, K. I can believe that money is handed over "under the table" for these recruits to some extent, but it's not open or the type of thing that someone can apply for. On the other hand, most of the black students at Harvard are very atypical for their group. Children of native-born Africans (i.e. not descendants of slaves) and of upper middle class blacks are heavily over-represented. The leftist lunatics would like to change that, of course, but even the must have second thoughts when wondergirl from the NYC ghetto gives her drug-dealing boyfriend access to her Harvard house (can't remember which one) to carry out a hit.
OK, the Crimson link gives the whole story about the 2009 shooting. Apparently, Brittany Smith, the black female Harvard student, didn't even live in Kirkland House where the hit occurred. Apparently, the ID's allow access to any Harvard residence hall, which the administration might want to re-think.

Rarely does it go well when the ghetto meets the country club set. At my son's prep school, they recruited a number of boys from "the city" as scholarship students in an effort not to appear so lily white or to assuage white guilt or something. Almost none of them graduated - they were kicked out of school one by one. One pulled a knife on another student. Another was caught selling drugs. Another was caught stealing money from a teacher's purse. Etc. You don't know whether to laugh or cry because the offenses were all so true to the stereotypical forms. Couldn't one of them have managed a stock fraud scheme or something less textbook? This story could never work its way into a work of fiction because it would be "racist" to depict the reality. The most traumatic to the students was that the father of one of the scholarship boys decided to kill himself and his entire family in a drunken rage. The boy survived the shooting. This was was perhaps more "diversity" than they had bargained for.
I will add that the experience was hard on the scholarship boys themselves. The school required the boys to wear a coat and tie. Each day they would have to walk from home to the train or bus (and back again) in attire that made them stand out in the ghetto. They were surely accused by their friends of "acting white". Some of the white students were fabulously rich, driving BMWs, traveling all over the world, etc. and this must have made them envious.
All in all the entire project was the typical well intentioned liberal clusterfark. Liberals in general think that good intentions are the sine qua non of any project - with them, any sin or crime is excusable. Without them, whatever good you do is negated. In reality, good intentions are what the road to hell is paved with and nothing more.

Did your family smoke peace pipe?

Tell us more. How did parents react? Does the program continue?
J, do you do rain dance for water engineering clients?
She is Nordic Swede Cherokee from ancient Aryan Indian tribe!
Parents loved it. Nothing makes liberals feel better than "helping". As far as I know (my son is long graduated) the program continues.

South African white private schools are full of this, as you can imagine, with endless rhetoric about "opportunity creation for the under-privileged" etc etc.
On the other hand, these sorts of exercise could be interpreted as the kind of cynical tokenism that will allow the system to survive, for its originally-intended beneficiaries, so long as the institutions appear to be making the requisite liberal noises in public. This is what I suspect, but some seem to have drunk deeply from the Kool-Aid (while others drink from the Pierian Spring, since the quality of education is still very high in these places).
Anon.
I agree about the education - both my children received excellent educations and were admitted to fine colleges. Even in small private schools there are "honors" courses for the brighter kids so they are not dragged down by the scholarship students. In the non-honors course there are also rich but not super bright white kids, recruited athletes, etc. The quality of those students is still above what you would get in a public school but they are not quite up to doing calculus, etc. The kids in the honors classes are mostly Ivy League material - the brightest of the bright.
The private schools pay their teachers considerably less than the public, but they attract better teachers who are interest in imparting knowledge to eager students. There are very few disciplinary problems - basically anyone that makes trouble (see above) or doesn't seem to want to be there is "separated from the school" (i.e. kicked out).
