Satisfaction

Today, at the end of the class, a student came to ask me detail about my rainwater infiltration sinkhole (see detail). He is a working engineer (without title yet) at a large building site in Tel Aviv, and the Municipality is demanding from them to solve the surface runoff disposal problem. In Tel Aviv, built on sand dunes, the freatic water table is very near the surface, causing severe damages to the the foundations. I didnt know but apparently Tel Aviv is considering to impose my solution as standard requirement. Most of the students are already working in construction and I had the satisfaction to show them that I am not a text book teacher but someone who does things in the real world. I like to imagine that my prestige rocketed sky high.

It was hard to read the plan. Is the sink hole pipe perforated? Is it filled with gravel or empty? How deep is it and how wide? How does it get bored?

Yes, it is a perforated spiral-reinforced HDPE 40 cm diametr pipe. It is empty. Depth depends on the position of the percolating soil layer (sandy loam or sand). Generally 6 to 8 meter. The hole is done by a standard perforating machine on a tractor or a vehicle.

I have had this experience myself - not at your level of course. Your prestige got a tremendous boost for sure.
