It appears that the good peasants of Hula, who are Sunni (the majority), had a week before raided a neighboring Alawi (the ruling minority) village and killed several families. The Hula massacre - universally condemned - was in fact an act of calculated ethnic vengeance. The conflict is assuming naked ethnic (genetic) format, as predicted from the beginning. This is Middle East politics.
Assad's Alawi regime cannot and will not give up power and no democratic elections will take place in Syria. Assad's defeat will be followed by pogroms and massacres and they know it. The ethnic strife has extended already to Tripoli, Lebanon, where ten people were killed yesterday. Israeli government maintains "radio silence" and no one is saying anything about Syria. We dont want to be involved in this murderous genetic war.

Ethnicity is not a perfect proxy for genetic relationship. For instance, Austrians, Hessians and Prussians all consider themselves part of the greater German ethnicity, but there is genetic substructure among them, i.e. they can be told apart by genetic techniques to some extent. However, due to all of the inbreeding among the Arabs, maybe the assumption works better in Syria.
The basis of ethnicity is ... genetics. It is absurd to fight and massacre for a difference of one protein or other in the DNA, but it is how it is.
I think it is a sure thing that Obama and his friends are working on a little plan to "fix" the situation there.

There is a cultural component to ethnicity in addition to a genetic component, J. That's why it's a messy issue. The genetic component is probably stronger in the Mideast, though, due to extensive inbreeding. That inbreeding has other quite negative features (birth defects, dysfunctional culture, etc.).
