Chinese leadership projects itself as a disciplined raw of identical serious men standing in front of a heroic paisage painting. Europeans are all different and the background shows faded medieval ruins. Israelis like to have Ben Gurion looking down pensively from the wall.No American collective picture surfaces in my mind.

I don't get why Italy and Spain are considered great nations in this context. They are the screw-ups. France is so-so, but on its way to join them in being screwed. The chance of them going down with this new president is a lot bigger than up IMO.
Only Germany has legitimacy. How cynical that Germany ends up running Europe.
OTOH, if Spain and Italy actually have a say in what to do now I fear even more. It's clear that these polities are not to be trusted with other people's money.
It's a wonderful medieval survival, not a faded ruin, J. Sometimes your tastes run to the philistine.
Anonymous, what is EXACTLY the those windows in the background? They seem dirty.
It is better not to know what is going on behind those windows.
Anon.
It is also better not to know what goes on behind those elaborate flower arrangements in Chinese Presidium meetings. But dirty windows - it must have a meaning!
Yes, J. They were in Rome, and Rome is a dirty city.
Actually, notice that the window panes are all red or green. It's possible that they are painted or made of marble. The rare book library at Yale University has marble window panes. They let in less light and thus aid book preservation.
Now I have to go and see that library. "The white, gray-veined marble panes of the exterior are one and one-quarter inches thick and are framed by shaped light gray Vermont Woodbury granite. These marble panels filter light so that rare materials can be displayed without damage. From the exterior, however, the building's powerful stone geometry serves to dominate the space it occupies in Hewitt University Quadrangle, amidst neo-Classical and neo-Gothic neighbors."
In the pics it looks powerful indeed. One learns new thing all the time. Thanks for the comment.
