Argentina: Meat Importer

Argentine meat exports fell to its lowest level in fifty years. The country eats 93% of its production and exports only about 7% - 9500 tonnes. Argentina's production costs are higher than those of Brasil and other competitors. Once Argentina was the main supplier of Smithfield, the legendary London meat market that used to trade 400,000 tonnes per year. Argentina has disappeared from that and other markets. But who cares? It is summer in Buenos Aires (pic).

Argentina running at a deficit so that it needs to import food. No problem, with its excellent credit it can just borrow the funds needed for the food imports. Oh, wait....

It looks as if the meat market in Buenos Aires is doing just fine, actually.

Argentina consumes 93% of the local meat. I wonder who gets the remaining 7%...
