Living Long

The Statistics Bureau of Israel published today a report on the demographic situation of Israel. In 2011, Israeli Jewish males were the longest living (of all national groups) with 80.7 years average, followed by Swiss males with 80.6 years. Having some experience with Israeli females (see ill.), I was not surprised to learn that they outlive us by three years. I think that the figures show that life in Israel - for men and women - is exceptionally good. Now, how could this data be twisted to show Israel in a bad light? HaAretz, that hideous fishwrap, does it. Let me quote and translate: "The situation of the Israeli woman is much worse (than men's situation). They are much lower in the international ranking, living less fully three years less than Japanese women, 83.6 vs 86.3 years. Obviously Israel is a most oppressive chauvinistic society, where female infanticide and binding of girl's feet are widespread. When girls reach puberty, fathers take them to the Beer Sheba beduin market to exchange them for camels and goats and shiny new Mercedes Benz.

I think a logical explanation is this: Jewish men have lower rates of alcoholism than most other developed country nationalities, so they live longer than would be expected otherwise. Israeli women do about as well as would be expected from Israel's economic, dietary and demographic profile, which is slightly less favorable than say Japan.

You are not following HaAretz's logic. Israeli women outlive everyone except Japanese women, showing how bad life in Israel is if you are a woman. BTW Ashkenazi females outlive even the Japanese and they never die before their spouses. They start to die only when they have extracted the last drop of "will to live" from their men.

My mother in law has now outlived two husbands and is ready to outlive a third, but there are almost no men left in her age group (90). I suppose she can work on sucking out my vital life forces instead.

Israel needs more tophets

Perhaps K's mother-in-law's ability to sap vital forces can be dissipated in a retirement home?

For me or for her? She lives alone in her own home, drives, etc. and wants nothing to do with "retirement" homes (and I can't say that I blame her).

Wait until she becomes frail and demands a lot of your and your wife's time. You will dream of putting her into a retirement home just for the rest and relief.

In the competition of life-sucking mothers-in-law, I must be among the champions. She has now outlived her poor husband by thirty years and spends her time thinking out trick to have us on permenent edge. Yesterday we discovered she was not taking her remedies but hoarding them, with the idea of killing herself. My wife cannot sleep. As for myself, I bought a book about psychological blackmail and how to protect oneself from it.

What's the suicide rate in Israel?

Émile Durkheim wrote a very good book about suicide:

I dont know. The official rate is one of the lowest of the world, but then suicide is a big sin and they are not accepted in Jewish cemeteries and it definitely can ruin the marriageability of close relatives. So people hides this things as if were a retarded child.

Anyway, old Jewish women never kill themselves, they sap the life out of their children.

Women in general threaten and "attempt" suicide at rates much higher than men, but many more men actually kill themselves, because they use much more effective methods.
So in women, suicide threats and attempts are often just ways of getting more attention rather than serious efforts to kill themselves.

Exactly ! All that women want is male attention. Even at age 90 they are ready to risk their lives to get noticed. I find that repugnant.

I find cultures where dumping your old people in a retirement home is acceptable repugnant, and think they're doomed to failure...

Why do you hate Anglos B?

The Russians have a saying-no matter the conversation, the guy with lice will always bring up the bathhouse. Are you itchy, V?

I see you have no close demential relatives suffering from Alzheimer or mental senescence. Some are very aggressive. Old age is terrible. Terrible to be old and terrible for the surroundings. They have to be fed and changed.
